January's Cloak: June 2015
http://januaryscloak.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Grieg: Nineteen Norwegian Folk Tunes, Op. 66. Yester-day, I listened to what excerpts I have of Grieg's Nineteen Norwegian Folk Tunes, Op. 66. One of the phrases in the sixth piece (Cow-call and Lullaby) sounded familiar, and it didn't take too long to place it. A similar phrase is in the fourth of Grieg's Symphonic Dances on Norwegian Themes, Op. 64. I looked up the notation for both pieces, and I was actually surprised by how similar they are:. January's Cloak: May 2015
http://januaryscloak.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Monday, May 25, 2015. The Decemberists' "The Wrong Year". I've listened to the Decemberists' What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World. Only three times so far, but I've heard various live versions of some of the songs because I've watched and listened to a lot of the radio station appearances that the Decemberists have been doing. It's not exactly relevant, but while writing this post, I referenced the lyric video. And I noticed that the hyphens in "long-forgotten" are missing.]. Monday, May 18, 2015.

January's Cloak: Jacques Brel's "L'homme dans la cité"
http://januaryscloak.blogspot.com/2015/07/jacques-brels-lhomme-dans-la-cite.html
Monday, July 27, 2015. Jacques Brel's "L'homme dans la cité". One of the things I noticed while listening to my French music is the snare drum part in Jacques Brel's "L'homme dans la cité." It bears more than a little resemblance to that in Ravel's Boléro (or, I suppose, any bolero, but Ravel's is probably the most famous and - like Brel - Ravel was a francophone). Click the image to enlarge it). Notation for Ravel's Boléro found here. Lhomme dans la cité. Jacques Brels Lhomme dans la cité.

January's Cloak: Cover Project Listening Schedule
http://januaryscloak.blogspot.com/2015/08/cover-project-listening-schedule.html
Saturday, August 1, 2015. Cover Project Listening Schedule. I have quite a few musical projects where I’m trying to learn the parts to every song by a band. I’m under no delusions about actually finishing any of these; I know I’ll never get that far, but even what little progress I’ve made already had enhanced my understanding of both specific songs and music in general. January's Cloak: The Mills Brothers' "Too Many Irons in the Fire"
http://januaryscloak.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-mills-brothers-too-many-irons-in.html
Friday, August 7, 2015. The Mills Brothers' "Too Many Irons in the Fire". This morning I listened to the first disc of the Mills Brothers' The Anthology (1931-1968). Even though I wasn't transcribing the lyrics, I noticed a small grammatical thing about the lines "Oh, it’s too bad your one fault will keep us apart / This fault is breaking my heart" in “Too Many Irons in the Fire.”. You have two beautiful eyes. Eyes that I idolize. You have such charms in your tresses. Two perfect arms for caresses.

January's Cloak: Handel: Messiah
http://januaryscloak.blogspot.com/2015/06/handel-messiah.html
Monday, June 29, 2015. Because I'd been reading a book about Handel when I started the Classical Music Queue. Messiah ended up being in it a lot. There were two weeks where I listened to it (or excerpts from it) everyday, so I started to become fairly familiar with it. Before this year, I'd listened to it only five times. But I couldn't find one that really matched, so some of the notation I have might vary. 2 Comfort ye my people. Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusale...

January's Cloak: April 2015
http://januaryscloak.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 27, 2015. Glenn Miller's "Wishing (Will Make It So)". A few months ago, I listened to a Glenn Miller compilation album and transcribed some of the lyrics. I noticed something interesting about the lyrics of "Wishing (Will Make It So)," which are pretty short and worth quoting in their entirety:. Wishing will make it so. Just keep on wishing, and cares will go. Dreamers tell us dreams come true. It’s no mistake. And wishes are the dreams we dream. When we’re awake. So if you wish long enough.

January's Cloak: August 2015
http://januaryscloak.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Monday, August 31, 2015. Saint-Saëns: Christmas Oratorio, Op. 12. I've been really into Saint-Saëns' Christmas Oratorio lately. Even though Christmas is months away, I've listened to it five times in the last few months. I noticed a couple things that I wanted to write about, and then - in following along in the score (found here. I found a few more. II Recit et chœur. I first learned of this cross-inscribing feature in John Eliot Gardiner's Bach: Music in the Kingdom of Heaven. The chœur section of the ...

January's Cloak: Mendelssohn: Prelude and Fugue in G major, Op. 37, No. 2
http://januaryscloak.blogspot.com/2015/06/mendelssohn-prelude-and-fugue-in-g.html
Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Mendelssohn: Prelude and Fugue in G major, Op. 37, No. 2. I recently watched a Gresham College lecture titled The German Revolution in English Organ Technology. At the beginning of the fugue, there are pairs of half-steps:. Click the image to enlarge it). In the second measure of the pedal part, there's C to B and then F to E. Bridging the fourth and fifth measures, there's G to F# and then C to B in the left-hand. Prelude and Fugue in G major Op. 37 No. 2.
