Follow Colleen as she spends 2 months in Thailand Summer 2012! Chama nameh Colleen and I am free: Burmese Political Prisoners. Chama nameh Colleen. (Hello! My name is Colleen.) (This quite nears the extent of my Burmese so far.) (Also, Burmese is a language written in characters so when we spell it out in English, we are only guessing based on the pronunciation. ). What is a political prisoner? The AAPP museum. On the table is the layout of a prison in Burma (one of 42.). We talked about lasting psycholo...

Follow Colleen as she spends 2 months in Thailand Summer 2012! A Monkey farm and climbing waterfalls: our day off. The sign says it all. This past saturday, we had a full free day and we’d been excited to explore the area more, so we called up Jo su (our taxi driver who has become our great friend, more on him later) and went on an excellent adventure! George, a paralyzed gibbon. Fun fact about gibbons: they do not recognize themselves in mirrors and instead try to attack their own reflections. All of th...

The rest of the day was devoted to adjusting, reading, and relaxing. I went to bed at 7:30 pm. We got the day off Sunday to get adjusted so we read more, and then the three of us biked into town. We will not be trying that here🙂.

Follow Colleen as she spends 2 months in Thailand Summer 2012! A Nursery School in a Paddy Village. Last week we had the opportunity to visit a rural village and learn about the major health issues they face, in particular by seeing a nursery school that was started there. In this beautiful village, people farm rice paddies. We met with the head of the school, a young man who recognized the needs of the community. He also told us that the school asked the families for a contribution, whatever they could ...

Students working to educate, fundraise and raise awareness. We had the opportunity to visit the Mae La refugee camp and tour LMTC, a technical college in the camp that Burma Humanitarian Mission helps provide scholarships for. Visiting the camp was unlike anything I’d ever seen. It gave us perspective on how massive the crisis in Burma is and how important it is to help empower young people who have spent their entire lives in its shadow. Photo by Paal Nilssen.
