Home : Allotment : Garden : Wildlife. Crop list and plan – 2017. Crop list & plan-2016. June 5, 2016. Last week I officially signed for the other half of the plot meaning I am now the proud keeper of a full plot and get the shed all to myself rather than having to share it. Allotment 1 – Colleen 0. Home : Allotment : Garden : Wildlife. Crop list and plan – 2017. Crop list & plan-2016. Summer, Showers & Slugs. July 23, 2016. July 23, 2016. I love all animals and even actively go out of my way to care for, rehabilitate and release sick and injured wildlife. However, I do sometimes wonder what the point of a slug actually is? An adventure into growing veg on an allotment. April 17, 2016. I’ve planted out all the broadbeans that recovered. These took up half the row. I still had some Crimson flowered broadbean seeds from last year so I finished off the double row with these. I’m hoping that I’ll see them in about a fortnight (I’ve never sown broad beans directly in the ground). They were lovely last year, such a pretty colour and they smelled fantastic. April 14, 2016. With all the rain this week I’d thought that the plo...

Despite it being the height of summer this weather hasn’t been helping the garden through what should be its period of peak productivity. Temperatures are lower than they should be and there’s little sunlight around at present. But in the face of pouring rain for much of today it was important to get out and harvest various things which had ripened. Gooseberries ripe for picking. A good gooseberry harvest from a humble (cheap! Just a few yards away the blueberry bush is in full production. Between the be...

An adventure into growing veg on an allotment. Tonight’s the night. July 26, 2015. It’s here. The night I’ve been waiting patiently for. The night that I’ve been imagining over and over again in my head for weeks has finally arrived. Tonight, I’m making Raymond Blanc’s pea risotto. The peas at the allotment are finally ready for picking so just before tea time, I headed along to collect as many pods as I could so that I could make the risotto with the freshest peas possible. Needless to say, it was well ...

It’s sometimes hard to believe that only a few months ago, the vegetables on my plate for tea tonight were just little seedlings starting out in the big wide world. Garlic ready to be lifted. Garlic, fresh from the ground. The purple tinged bulbs of the Lautrec Wight garlic. Strawberries, potatoes and broad beans. Uchiki Kuri winter squash. Tonight’s the night. Interes...

For me, this is one of the best times of the vegetable growing year. Root crops have been rapidly swelling and there is so much lovely food to pick and enjoy. First out of the ground today was this trio of beetroots: one each of Detroit White, Golden and Chioggia. Colourful trio of beetroots. They ended up in a roasting bag with some swede, also picked today. Alongside are the first mangetout of the year. Beets ready for roasting, with mangetout alongside. Well, every once in a while one of them pokes its way to the front. Sometimes its pretty fully formed, other times not. On those occasions, I usually know what I want to accomplish, but maybe not how to go about it. Google to the rescue! I’ve got travel brochures and maps, maps, and more maps from all over!
