http://frugalscholar.blogspot.com/2015/07/why-keep-working.html
Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Tuesday, July 21, 2015. The Great Recession knocked down the stock portion of my retirement accounts by almost 50% and led to the firing of the three tenured French teachers. In a panic, I discovered the Firecalc site (Financial Independence/Retire Early? The people who post on Firecalc are either eager to retire ASAP or ecstatic to have done so. Many seem to be or have been highly paid folks in IT, engineering, and so on. Some even had a stock option windfal...Then,...

Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Tuesday, August 26, 2014. Potato Corn Chowder with a dash of nostalgia. Oh, how I needed some potatoes, my comfort food of choice. Made a delicious soup from the Vegetarian Epicure. The secret, he said, was the nutritional yeast Anna Thomas called for. I couldn't find my old copy, but I found the recipe online. As expected too goopy (flour? With various things I didn't have. Here's what I did: threw some frozen caramelized onions. And a can of drained corn. Served wi...

Frugal Scholar: I Heart Baby Wipes for the Traveler (and Duct Tape)

Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Monday, June 29, 2015. I Heart Baby Wipes for the Traveler (and Duct Tape). Does everyone already know this? I only thought of this last summer. Our first purchase in Paris (after some food, of course) will be BABY WIPES! Carry a few in a ziplock to wipe your sweaty brow, the back of your neck, and- MY FAVORITE- your sweaty feet. They are amazingly restorative. Mr FS wraps some around a pencil. What can I say? He is a genius. June 29, 2015 at 8:22 PM. Back when I had...

Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Question About Mom's Broker.Help! I know I usually write about thrift shopping, so the readers out there might not have any answers. But you had such good advice about my dental woes (actually dentist office woes) that I am back with a bigger issue. Luckily, my brother who has been uninvolved now ways we should look over the broker's records. Since my mother likes and trusts men more than women (she says this! For instance, there is a cate...

Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Thursday, October 30, 2014. Paula's Choice Deal.and Thanks for the Comments. I wrote a post questioning whether people found frugality a FUN activity. I received many thoughtful comments, which were met with . . .silence. Sorry, dear Readers, I have a very difficult work schedule this semester. It's one that sounds easy to those who do not teach. However, when I describe it to teachers, I am met with a jaw drop, followed by OMG. If you haven't bought from this wonder...

Frugal Scholar: First day in Paris: Mean Girl
http://frugalscholar.blogspot.com/2015/07/first-day-in-paris-mean-girl.html
Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Friday, July 17, 2015. First day in Paris: Mean Girl. My first full day in Paris began.miserably. Air France had lost our luggage and we hadn't yet gotten around to a Monoprix to get some needed items. We felt disheveled and dusty, more scruffy than usual. To cheer ourselves up, we decided to go to the Louvre: 2 weeks remained on the year membership we bought the previous year. The rep said that was the procedure for lost cards. Forgotten cards were different. PS Tha...
