From the District of Columbia to the Republic of Colombia. June 25, 2010. I had to take most of these photos on the sly so as not to embarass anyone, but this is a tiny window into the area where my students live:. After a mild rain the road disappears. In the rainy season it’s completely flooded. Laquo; Heads or tails? It is so hard sometimes to see the living conditions of your students in an underprivileged area. On July 8, 2010. Medellin | Colombian Heights

From the District of Columbia to the Republic of Colombia. July 20, 2010. Welcome back and happy Bicentennial to Colombia! No No No. They wanted us to make posters about responsible behavior. Oh yes, we rescheduled our flights and hung around to make 30 posters about recycling and punctuality and building a strong work ethic that took us all of one afternoon to make. That, in a nutshell, is how our school functions every single day. In a word: inefficiently. But onto more fun things: my mom’s visit!

The comma between here and there. February 24, 2010. On a recent foray into the intricate web humbly known as the Internets, I came to a familiar oasis known as XKCD. The comic titled Freedom. Gave me license guffaw. It also provided me a moment of self-reflection as we all have had moments where we really wanted to act only to be held back by social convention. For example: throwing a penny off a tall building, greeting folk with a heart felt “F-YOU! On to things much more cheery and decidedly awesome&#...

The comma between here and there. March 25, 2010. 8221; Does this bode ill for the printed material? In a word: yes. Am I happy about it: no. But why? Eg Million Book Project. Words are words, who cares if they’re printed on a page or more conveniently transferred via .pdf files? Isn’t partial destruction of a work destruction? To really nitpick one could pursue the idea of later editions that change the binding style/method of a text, does it take away/add to a work? Questions, so long as context is und...

The comma between here and there. February 18, 2010. On my recent journey to PH. to see my grandfather, I was reintroduced to some old family history. My grandfather and I spent a better part of the morning reading my thrice-great-Grandfather’s journal from 1850. This particular journal of his documents his voyage from Baltimore to California via boat. Yes, G. Everitt had the pluck to sail round Cape Horn. 8230; I’ll refrain from referencing The Confessions ). Will they have trouble parsing my script?

The comma between here and there. February 11, 2010. The past few days have been a trial: a trial of gaming. Some background: I am not a people person. I like people with a few provisos: never in large numbers and never on consecutive days. Now, I would not go so far as to call myself a misanthrope. I say this with good reason for Plato. 1) ComaR’s “I want you D.A.N.C.E.” (Jackson 5 v. Justice). 8211; Excellent site for all you punsters. 8230; at least according to cavemen (and woman). When someone asks me “Are you happy? 8221; I always consider Solon’s response to Croesus the King of Lydia: ” Call him, however, until he die, not happy but fortunate.” [Full dialogue found in Herodotus’s Histories 1.29-33] For those of us who do not pour over classical texts such as Herodotus’s “Histories”, Solon.
