Columbia Writers' Workshop II: The Predicament of Procrastination

http://columbiawritersworkshop.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-predicament-of-procrastination.html

Sunday, May 3, 2015. The Predicament of Procrastination. By Julia Rogers Hook. If Shakespeare had had social media we might have never known Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet or even the ever-charming MacBeths. Email during the time of Dickens would have left the miserly Scrooge and sweet Tiny Tim buried forever with dear Charlie. And yet I seem to always find myself procrastinating when it comes to writing. I’m always in awe of my colleagues as they doggedly do whatever it takes to get their work out the...

Columbia Writers' Workshop II: Zooilla and the Art of Non-Fiction Proposals

http://columbiawritersworkshop.blogspot.com/2015/03/zooilla-and-art-of-non-fiction-proposals.html

Sunday, March 8, 2015. Zooilla and the Art of Non-Fiction Proposals. By Laura P. Valtorta. Some people live fortunate lives. I am extra fortunate, but not as fortunate as Zooilla, who has an agent, writes creative non-fiction, and teaches at the University of South Carolina. I call Zooilla “super lucky.” He makes a living writing about animals, and teaching the squirrels who attend USC. Who earns money writing about monkeys, opossums, and bees and gets free trips to India and Brazil thrown in? Zooilla is...

Columbia Writers' Workshop II: May 2015

http://columbiawritersworkshop.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 31, 2015. Art Responds to Black Lives Matter Movement. Photo by Sumter County Gallery of Art. Ekphrastic poetry is poetry based on works of art. I recently gave an ekphrastic poetry reading at Sumter County Gallery of Art based on art by Antoine Williams. One of his works is an installation called “What It Look Like”. It includes elements such as tires, police caution tape, and flowers. Originated as gangster terminology similar to the word goon. Perhaps if blacks were the ones who enslaved w...

Columbia Writers' Workshop II: A DAY AT A BOOK FAIR

http://columbiawritersworkshop.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-day-at-book-fair.html

Sunday, March 22, 2015. A DAY AT A BOOK FAIR. Last month I, along with more than 75 other authors, participated in Book ‘Em North. A day-long book fair. Proved to be friendly and supportive of us writers, beginning with the “Meet and Greet” on Friday evening at the Village Station Restaurant. We were treated to drinks and an appealing table of hors d’oeuvres. Owner Arnold West, as well as official hosts and the Lumberton Visitors Bureau, showed up to make us feel welcome. For the last several years.

Moseriah Writes: Fresh Eyes

https://moseriahwrites.blogspot.com/2014/09/fresh-eyes.html

The Forest and the Trees. Tuesday, September 30, 2014. I read an interesting article on the Huffington Post blog recently. Apparently a woman posted a picture of her kitchen and immediately got “helpful” messages telling her it was outdated and needed a makeover. Her eventual reaction was to list all the ways in which her kitchen is amazing just the way it is. For example, and I’m paraphrasing: “When I turn on the faucet, water comes out! Not just hot water, but cold, too! But then I forget about all of ...

Moseriah Writes: The Power of Storytelling

https://moseriahwrites.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-power-of-storytelling.html

The Forest and the Trees. Monday, June 29, 2015. The Power of Storytelling. Every time we open a book, a newspaper, a reading device. or turn on television, a computer or phone, we are exposed to stories. Whether it’s news or literature, fiction, non-fiction, sit-com or reality show, Facebook or Instagram or any other configuration, we are constantly processing information. We are bombarded, really. I honestly have no idea. I just have the information. What also seems evident to me is the need to set up ...

The Forest and the Trees. Thursday, January 22, 2015. JANUARY 2015 BOOK SELECTION-PILGRIMS. Okay, first things first. I promised a final opinion on A. And The Book of Life. I may read them in the future because of the author’s skill but am not in a hurry to do so. If this is your cup of tea, you may well be entranced. My book selection for January is a collection of short stories by Elizabeth Gilbert called Pilgrims. Gilbert is most well-known for Eat, Pray, Love. Yes Yes. Yes. Thursday, January 22, 2015.

The Forest and the Trees. Thursday, January 1, 2015. So it’s hard to believe another year has come to an end. Don’t we always say that though? Still It’s a time for reflection. It’s the time of year my family comes to the beach. It’s a time of quiet. A time of laughter and joy. A time of tending the soul. Whether you believe in the soul or not, most everyone believes in the beauty of just being. Even if it’s only for a limited amount of time. One: Write (sensing a theme here? My Beautiful Beach…. Columbia Writers' Workshop II

Columbia Writers' Workshop II. A Chapter of South Carolina Writers Association. Sunday, March 18, 2018. In preparing for an appearance at the SC State Library. I asked myself if my novel What MissingMeans. Is autobiographical. Without thinking about it, my answer was “no.” The events that occur in the book didn’t happen. I didn’t base the characters on people I know. But after some consideration, the certainty of my “no” has wavered. The atmosphere and tone of What Missing Means. Despite my intentions, w...
