Conquer the command line. I'm running bash training from September. Zen and the art of checking it's plugged in. Sometimes bugfixing is a near-zen demonstration of your mad l33t skillz. You stare at the problem for a few seconds, nod sagely and deliver a short flurry of keystrokes. The bug is squashed and the crowd goes wild. Worst of all is when it turns out to be an extraneous space, missing quote, or. You were editing the wrong freakin' file the entire time. Are you editing the right thing? So you bre...

Conquer the command line. I'm running bash training from September. Ask web developers about the tools they use, and it’s likely they’ll start talking about hardware, software and web applications. That’s understandable, but it’s not the whole picture. I believe things like software pale in comparison with the most powerful tool available: coffee. Large organisations only survive because people drink coffee. It’s all about people. And if you hit a big enough problem with people you might not even. The pr...

Conquer the command line. I'm running bash training from September. Dashing into trouble - why html comments break in firefox. There's a perennial question that pops up on email lists and from other developers. The question goes something like this:. This page works fine in everything except Firefox and I can't tell why. it's showing an HTML comment as raw code. This problem usually boils down to a quirk in the way Firefox handles HTML comments. Most browsers only treat. As a closing comment. If your pag...

Choose your resolution | the 200ok weblog
http://weblog.200ok.com.au/2008/12/choose-your-resolution.html
Conquer the command line. I'm running bash training from September. The old rules for supporting screen resolutions were simple. Monitors were basically all the same shape and new ones just got a little bigger. so all you really had to do was support the standard resolution of new monitors, plus one resolution "back". Easy! All of these displays are. We don't have a situation where the major differences are divided between new and old, nor is there a linear increase in size as new displays come out.

ARIA (sydjs lightning talk) | the 200ok weblog
http://weblog.200ok.com.au/2013/03/aria-sydjs-lightning-talk.html
Conquer the command line. I'm running bash training from September. ARIA (sydjs lightning talk). Last week I did a five-minute lightning talk about ARIA, at Sydjs. The main point was to illustrate a secondary benefit to using ARIA, beyond the primary purpose of accessibility: taking advantage of the standardised definition of state. If you already have to define state and declare element relationships for your JavaScript, why not use ARIA attributes instead of generic classes or data attributes? If you h...

Conquer the command line. I'm running bash training from September. 2005-07-31: to patch or not to patch? For years, Microsoft Internet Explorer has been criticised for its lack of security, high number of vulnerabilities and endless patching regime. With a cluster of Firefox updates in the last few weeks, it seems natural to ask the question: should Firefox be getting similar criticism? Why aren't people complaining about Firefox needing so many updates? Firefox clearly goes the other way: as soon as a ...

Conquer the command line. I'm running bash training from September. Try the "Export your data" experiment. Jeremy's post about independent publication. Got me thinking. While not everyone's about to abandon the silos and self-publish everything, it should at least prompt you to consider where your data is living - and whether you can even get a copy of it. Is there any info in there you'd miss? If yes, shouldn't you back it up? You'll quickly realise not all backups and exports are easy to use and the qu...
