Dairy Project

Following the success of the water project then the library project we discussed a new venture with the school teachers, committee and local leaders. It was obvious that some form of food security was necessary in the local community as Swaziland has a history of drought resulting in food shortages. When we visited last year we discussed the main issues with all concerned, we need to know that the project will be viable, manageable and sustainable before we commit to the major expense and work involved.

While we were at the school carrying out the water project we had discussed the next project with the teachers and governors. It was felt that a library at the school would be beneficial and it fitted with our belief that education is the way forward. We launched an appeal for books in the Sleaford area and were staggered when over 18,000 books were donated! On the day of the official opening the teachers were so overcome that several just burst into tears. It made us realise how difficult their job ...

Who Are We?

SSCF is a very small charity and it is run in the simplest possible way. We have three Trustees who see to all the formalities and are hands-on with all aspects of the day-to-day running of the charity. I am one of the original group that went to Swaziland in 2000. Since then I have been on all the visits and have enjoyed the challenges that we have faced as a charity both here, in Sleaford, and in Swaziland. We know the people at Nyamane so well that it feels like going home when we visit!

The Playpump is a simple mechanical pump sunk into a bore hole with a children’s roundabout mounted at the head. The action of the roundabout being turned pumps water up and into storage tanks mounted on towers. Playpumps are sited at schools so there is never a shortage of willing children to play on the roundabout and therefore no shortage of water. The teachers at Nyamane school know the families in the community and they help identify needy children to join our sponsorship scheme.
