Gripped my hand and positioned it for a proper high-five. She ran to her friends and then back to me. She shouted bye bye Mama. And never looked back. Squealed and ran straight to me. Thursday, March 5, 2015. Happy Birthday Charlotte Cole. My eyes unlocked extra early for you today. I walked past your room and couldn’t help but peek in. I couldn’t wait to see you. I have been counting the sparkles in your eyes and my blessings for five whole years. You wished for a stuffed dog, a mermaid Barbie, a Lego set, and a human anatomy book. You couldn't wait to see if your wishes came true. Thank you Charlie for being ours and being you. We can't wait to see what five looks like.

Friday, October 4, 2013. It used to happen each year at this time- an internal craving to take flight. I would search myself and question the roots that I had started to bury. Wondering if I was where I was supposed to be. Each year I made excuses for explorations unclaimed and paths cut short. Today I find unwavering comfort in my chosen route and my beautifully buried roots. I wish for her faith in flight, depth in her roots, and the capacity of heart to want both. Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Joey picked up a packet of papers last week. The questions inside were simple to answer. With ease I filled in her name and age and emergency contacts. It was equally as easy to think back to the day she was born. We created her—and she created us. Several months ago Gracie relayed that her teacher told her she was shine. Like sunshine and diamonds. With enchantment filling her indigo eyes she questioned, “Should we have a dance party? Swiftly she swayed her attention to counting buses and forecasting how many we could see on our 5-mile commute. Friday, August 16, 2013. As families poured down the hill gathering in a pool by the doors, I concentrated on every crack in the concrete and studied the veins in my hands. I swallowed my coffee hard and listened to happiness sing behind me. As she marched with a confident stride I wanted to carry her.
