He won the ASME Young Composers Award in 1980 for French Suite and has been commissioned by, among others, the Melbourne and Canberra Symphony Orchestras, and the Seymour Group. He studied conducting with John Curro and Ezra Rachlin and made his conducting debut in 1979 with La Belle Helene. For SATB and ensemble;.

Being arguably the most abstract of art forms, music needs an enlightened approach. How to think through music, and to talk about it. How to articulate between collaborators. How to build musical dramaturgy within the context of time based media.
