Ramble On Rose: February 2012
http://rambleonrose-rr.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Ramblings about prairie plants, conservation, and the trials of a clay-filled garden. Monday, February 27, 2012. Book Review: Fifty Plants that Changed the Course of History. By Bill Laws is a valuable read for any plant lover. It illustrates how peoples' uses, and at times abuses, of plants are inextricably linked to the ups and downs of our society. Laws effectively places plants in their historical context: for example, he ties the rubber tree to the rise of the automobile, the poppy to the Opium Wars...

http://rambleonrose-rr.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Ramblings about prairie plants, conservation, and the trials of a clay-filled garden. Friday, December 30, 2011. I did a so-so job on my gardening resolutions in 2011.what have I resolved to do in the garden in 2012? 1 Give it time and space. I know I want a couple more hostas and heucheras in my back shade border, and I want to add wild gingers (Asarum canadense). To form a groundcover in the misfit border. But aside from those, I have no plans about new ornamentals. (The veggie garden will of c...All t...

Ramble On Rose: June 2012
http://rambleonrose-rr.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Ramblings about prairie plants, conservation, and the trials of a clay-filled garden. Wednesday, June 13, 2012. So far it's been a rather dismal year for cool-season edibles. We went from winter straight to mid-80s summer conditions (which was tough on my seedlings), back to rain and cold (which they survived, but it inhibited their growth), back again to hot, humid summer. Ramble On Rose: March 2012

Ramblings about prairie plants, conservation, and the trials of a clay-filled garden. Sunday, March 18, 2012. March Bloom Day: Summer's Here. You've been hearing it all over the blogosphere: unseasonably warm weather has settled in for the past week or so across much of the country. Here in Chicagoland, it feels like we've skipped spring completely (although I'm pretty confident it will rear its chilly, sleety, muddy head at some point). Are finally living up to their name! I am so careless these days!

Ramble On Rose: May 2012
http://rambleonrose-rr.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Ramblings about prairie plants, conservation, and the trials of a clay-filled garden. Friday, May 18, 2012. Traveling caused me to miss the official Garden Blogger's Bloom Day for May, hosted by Carol at May Dreams Gardens. But like gardeners all across America, I am enjoying the explosion of spring blooms! My spring stalwarts, native columbines, are blooming. As are golden alexanders (Zizia aurea). And fellow carrot-family member, Taenidia integerrima. See how similar they look with their yellow umbels?

Ramblings about prairie plants, conservation, and the trials of a clay-filled garden. Thursday, January 15, 2015. So You're Going Through Chemotherapy. That's what I envision one of those cheesy brochures would say. Many years ago I was actually handed a brochure that read "So You've Got Mono" therefore I know they really exist! Here's another one, a favorite of mine from The Simpsons:. Many people have been asking me lately, "what's it like? Here's what my experience is like:. Soothing commercial voice:...

Ramblings about prairie plants, conservation, and the trials of a clay-filled garden. Sunday, January 22, 2012. Flora of Costa Rica. I have been very bad about blogging lately, and part of my excuse is that I recently went on vacation to the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. (This, by the way, is a great way to beat the winter blahs; I highly recommend it.). But at the resort where we stayed, I found lush, manicured landscapes. We also had a chance to see the "transitional" forest at a nearby volcano, w...
