Watching Heartache On TV. Thursday, October 26, 2006. The piccolo and flute are very similar. Both instruments produce sound when the player blows across the reed and they make a sound that is almost the same except for the pitch. The piccolo is a very high-pitched instrument. It's sound is ear piercing. The flute has a lower pitch than the piccolo. It's sound is more smooth and soothing. The flute is also longer than the flute, which is why it has the lower pitch.
