Zippy's Zeitgeist: December 2009
http://zippyszietgeist.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, December 26, 2009. Im thinking about collaborative learning, and, because of an odd point of synchronicity- leadership. First of all, theres a video on YouTube. That is a focal point of my musing. Alex Hughes, an 11th grader from Greensboro, North Carolina, made it for a Dept of Education contest. A couple days after I watched this video, I attended the University of Toledos graduation. It was an impressive scene, with over 1000 graduates. The usual graduation hyperbole was flying with ...A vic...

Zippy's Zeitgeist: July 2010
http://zippyszietgeist.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Tuesday, July 13, 2010. Clandestine. That's a word I don't hear very often any more- a fabulous word with rather seedy, sinister undertones. Civil rights. That's a phrase I don't hear very often, either. I think there's a correlation there. That bothers me. In real terms, that means citizens have lost the presumption of privacy. Heard of Big Brother? In 1992, actress Joan Collins sued Globe magazine because they had used a telephoto lens located on public property to take pictures of her on private prope...

The Big Bad du Jour: July 2011
http://thebigbaddujour.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, July 21, 2011. By the end of the episode, we've found that Tara's own family is awful, and that she believed she was part demon. It's been established that she is officially part of the group, with everyone bonding together to save her from her father- even though she cast a spell that could have caused them to be killed by demons. She is forgiven and accepted, claimed as family. AND, equally importantly, the big love fest at the end that solidifies Tara (and Spike and Anya) as part of the expa...

The Big Bad du Jour: September 2010
http://thebigbaddujour.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Saturday, September 18, 2010. This seems like another monster-of-the-week shows with a twist: Giles is the monster, transformed by Ethan Raines (of course). But even though it is essentially a stand-alone, not an integral part of the Big Bad plot this season, this episode more clearly introduces the philosophical question at the core of this season, and, in ways, the series. What does it mean to be a man? Put in a less (potentially) sexist manner, what does it take to be human? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

The Big Bad du Jour: Restless
http://thebigbaddujour.blogspot.com/2011/01/restless.html
Saturday, January 15, 2011. Season four ends not with vanquishing Big Bad, but with an artful, experimental show of dream sequences. Much has been written about this episode, and the dvd includes Joss' detailed commentary on the episode- I really don't have much to say that's not been said before, probably by people who have said it better. Should I move on? Peppers his journey with options, ones he is too stymied to grab. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Best Laid Plans. Change of Focus (Because ...

The Big Bad du Jour: No Place Like Home
http://thebigbaddujour.blogspot.com/2011/07/no-place-like-home.html
Tuesday, July 19, 2011. No Place Like Home. This specific episode is concerned with identity as well. Buffy finds out the Dawn is "The Key," with no idea yet what that means, except that Dawn has only recently become human. Buffy's grousing about wanting to be an only child- growing pains as she grows into her role as big sister. So exactly what does the title mean? Not sure, but the domestic family theme is crucial, and the exploration of identity in the first few episodes continues. The Best Laid Plans.

Zippy's Zeitgeist: Questions That Need Asked
http://zippyszietgeist.blogspot.com/2010/06/questions-that-need-asked.html
Monday, June 28, 2010. Questions That Need Asked. Caveat: yes, I think too much. Just nodding and smiling and passing the Communion juice would make me a whole lot more fun. Do you have to follow religious laws to be faithful? Andof course.can an uncircumcised man be religious? As a throwaway leading into a transition, he said, "Well, of course those aren't the questions the church should be concerned about now." (Or something close to that.). Should gluttons be regarded the same as homosexuals? Again, S...
