Connecting from Peru

Sunday, March 15, 2009. Well, I arrived in Madison at 4PM on Tuesday, a very tired woman after a trip full of plane cancellations and missed connections. Sean picked me up, deposited me with my luggage at Bridget’s house where I am resting and eating good food. I finally went to the kitchen and drank water from the tap with only a little trepidation. I’m sleeping a lot! Despite coming home early, I have a sense of gratitude for:. 8226; The youth group leader, Henry plans to go to the municipality with my...

Connecting from Peru: July 2008

http://www.connectingfromperu.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 31, 2008. What are you doing joining the Peace Corps at your age? OK, so that's not exactly how she said it when Mary C looked at me puzzled and said, "Isn't this the time of life when you are supposed to rest and relax? The flippant answer is that I have a low tolerance for boredom. Actually it fits a pattern. At 20, I went from rural Oregon to nursing school in New York City. Too naive to be scared of more than flunking the entrance exam which I had to take on arrival. At 52, I took a le...

Connecting from Peru: August 2008

http://www.connectingfromperu.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, August 27, 2008. Last days in Madison. Wow, 2 weeks from today, I'll be checking into the Peace Corps training at the Holiday Inn, Georgetown, Washington DC. I'm flying in a day early to spend the evening with Jenni, Jeff and Alex. Congratulations Jenni and Jeff on your engagement! I'll be flying back from Peru for a wedding sometime next year! I'll be in DC over the weekend for Alex's 4th birthday, then back to Madison for one last week of packing and goodbyes. Monday, August 18, 2008. Then J...

Connecting from Peru: Rough patch in Peru

http://www.connectingfromperu.blogspot.com/2009/02/rough-patch-in-peru.html

Thursday, February 26, 2009. Rough patch in Peru. Well, this PC volunteer has indeed hit a rough patch. I’ve had a couple of illnesses that have laid me low and necessitated me going to a city 5 hours south of my site for medical care and rest. No weird tropical diseases, nothing I won’t bounce back from but tough. Right now I am staying in a hostel, eating Jello and sipping Gatorade. I may never want to see Gatorade again! Needless to say, I’m discouraged waiting for energy and appetite to rebound.

Alpaca Attacka: July 2009

http://jennyschwartz.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

My Peace Corps Peru Experience 2008-2010. Wednesday, July 22, 2009. Ok so that may be old school at this point.but its what we said back in the day of Riverside High School 2000-2004. But the end point is that RHS Students basically rock. Why you might ask? Oh well grab a seat and I will tell you:. Then even more are missing at least 3 or 4 teeth due to tooth extractions- my health post doesn't have the instruments to fill cavities, they just get to be so bad that they take the whole tooth out. I can&#82...

Alpaca Attacka: Lessons Learned

http://jennyschwartz.blogspot.com/2010/06/lessons-learned.html

My Peace Corps Peru Experience 2008-2010. Monday, June 7, 2010. 8221; was the general consensus. I was taken aback. Not exactly sure why, I know had I been talking to myself my senior year of high school I would have loved the idea of half days just as much as they did. But now, 6 years after graduation (god that makes me feel old) all I can think of is how much I took for granted what we have in the states. Mr Carter, my 6. Grader wouldn’t have? Not any student I’ve ever seen. What did we do? Ask anyone...

http://jennyschwartz.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

My Peace Corps Peru Experience 2008-2010. Friday, February 12, 2010. Good Run of Bad Luck Turned Around. Then today, the best news possible. The highlight of my week, possibly my month, or maybe even the year: I am in possession to the keys of the future library of Nanchoc. Yes, let me repeat that again: I HAVE THE KEYS TO THE FUTURE LIBRARY OF THE TOWN OF NANCHOC! Well I draw some, paint a little, read Newsweeks that my Mom sent me, and have found myself picking up a few books. And just in case you don&...

Alpaca Attacka: Really. You’re Going to Steal Compost???

http://jennyschwartz.blogspot.com/2010/08/really-youre-going-to-steal-compost.html

My Peace Corps Peru Experience 2008-2010. Sunday, August 22, 2010. Really. You’re Going to Steal Compost? Maybe it was Beto, the guy who cleans the health post. I yelled over the back wall and asked him if he’d seen my compost, he replied “what is compost? 8221; Guess not. Okay, I needed another train of thought. Who knew about my compost? I yelled over the fence to Don Alejo, the guy who works the tractor, to ask him. Nope, he said he hadn’t seen it. So after channeling my inner 8 year old and telling m...

http://jennyschwartz.blogspot.com/2010/06/mmmmm-bagels.html

My Peace Corps Peru Experience 2008-2010. Monday, June 7, 2010. Things have been looking up at site. I feel far more productive and happy. I spent the past few weeks trying to figure out why. I have a project that’s goings great (a biohuerto behind the health post), I will build my first cocina mejorada tomorrow (4. But naw, that’s not what’s improved my productivity and made me at times actually giddy. No, I believe I’ve narrowed it down to one of 2 things:. I increased my chocolate intake. That faithfu...

http://jennyschwartz.blogspot.com/2010/08/vacations-keep-us-sane.html

My Peace Corps Peru Experience 2008-2010. Sunday, August 22, 2010. Vacations Keep us Sane. I don’t know what any Peace Corps volunteer would do without the occasional visit from home. We need the much needed payload of good chocolate, spices, hair ties, and other amazing things from home just to keep our mental health in stable condition. Not to mention the much needed reminder of all things American and a good dose of State side culture. You’re gonna throw punches in the Wolrd Cup? Now that I’ve h...

Alpaca Attacka: November 2010

http://jennyschwartz.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

My Peace Corps Peru Experience 2008-2010. Monday, November 8, 2010. I remember my first day in Nanchoc. It was December 1. Companion…which is how I was able to notice so quickly how bad his teeth were. If it weren’t for the big patch of gray that were his teeth, Eddie would have had one cute crooked smile. The project was going great, kids were brushing their teeth; good dental health was had by all…or was it? Sometimes things just work out don’t they? I was having a personal reassessment moment that las...

http://jennyschwartz.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

My Peace Corps Peru Experience 2008-2010. Tuesday, April 20, 2010. 8220;An Adventure is Simply a Well Planned Trip Gone Awry”. I forget who said that, but whoever they were they knew their stuff. I recently returned from a trip to the Peruvian Jungle than can be summarized in that quote. I think it´s best if I start from the beginning, so here we go:. There was a boat, we went to sleep and woke up at the butt crack of dawn (3am) and took a TWISTY TURNY road to the dock at Yurimangas. I,. With the mission...

Connecting from Idaho

Staying connected with family and friends across the country. Times Are A Changing. Monday, July 29, 2013. Times Are A Changing. Posted by the opsahls at 10:46 AM. The past couple years of my life have been interesting. It got bad for awhile, but that turned out to be a good thing. That doesn't sound very logical on the surface, so let me explain.
