Geet Duggal's Blog. Open Doors with Google Hangouts. December 18, 2013. In an earlier post. I mentioned that active forms of communication like video chatting and telephone conversations can be pretty unnatural when you consider family and friends just ‘hanging out’ at home together, for instance. I also mentioned that maybe video chat can be treated in a more passive manner to encourage a more passive, natural chatting style. Initial Thoughts on ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’. Geet Duggal's Blog. Histograms and density estimation. November 15, 2008. It is a common practice in the statistical analysis of data to group the samples into bins or categories. The goal is usually to extract some structure that is useful and often hidden from us when looking at direct plots of the sample set. The purpose of this note is to speak a little to the role of histograms. For a given a sample, what bin does it belong to? How many samples are in a given bin? The diagram outlines some relevant ...

Lamport Stresses Thinking Before Coding | Geet Duggal's Blog

Geet Duggal's Blog. Lamport Stresses Thinking Before Coding. April 13, 2014. More specifically, he suggests some of the ‘thought’ before coding should be formalized as a specification (like a blueprint) written in the language of mathematics. The TLA specification language. A couple of notes:. 2) Large-scale adoption of this formalism seems like it would be difficult. There is the obvious overhead in teaching people to understand and implement this formalism in their work. Even if knowledge of TL...Consi...

Geet Duggal's Blog. Grabbing individual colors from color maps in matplotlib. August 22, 2011. Want an individual color from a color map. You would think this would be easy (and it is as you will see below), but as I traversed the documentation, I could not find for the life of me how to do this. After looking at various matplotlib functions, Rob. Reclaiming your second monitor in OS X Lion. Scala is pretty awesome. Middot; June 19, 2013. Fantastic, thank you so much! Middot; June 19, 2013. R and Python (RPy2): Rank-revealing QR Decomposition | Geet Duggal's Blog

Geet Duggal's Blog. R and Python (RPy2): Rank-revealing QR Decomposition. January 27, 2011. I used to use R all the time until I got into Python, NumPy, and SciPy. In general, however, R has much more sophisticated packages for statistics (I don’t think there’s too much argument here). Unfortunately, R, in my opinion, is a cumbersome language for string manipulations or more general programming (though it is fairly capable). You can get the best of both worlds with RPy. Geet Duggal's Blog. Atom package for wrapping lines. May 22, 2014. Even though I have always seemed to fall back to Vim in a terminal for my coding, I have been using Atom. I was surprised at how easy and quick. It was to code a package for it, and to subsequently make available to everyone else through their package management system (the image above takes you to the package). On a slightly related note, my friend Rob. Pointed me to this interesting Vim modernization project. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
