simul justus et peccator: October 2013
http://justusetpeccator.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Friday, October 18, 2013. Sermon on Habakkuk 1-2. Let me tell you about the prophet Habakkuk. First, awesome name. Tried and failed to name my youngest that. Second, his book is very violent. 8212;apparently using up 10% of all the uses. Of the actual word “violence” in the Bible. There are other books arguably more violent,. But Habakkuk’s book is short. And has little comfort to balance it. His basic point is that invading armies are a punishment from God,. He doesn’t say clearly. So imma gonna smitcha.

simul justus et peccator: Good Friday meditation on Psalm 31 and bodies
http://justusetpeccator.blogspot.com/2015/04/good-friday-meditation-on-psalm-31-and.html
Sunday, April 05, 2015. Good Friday meditation on Psalm 31 and bodies. Let’s talk about sex offenders for a moment. If we can’t talk about them on Good Friday. When Jesus gave up his body for the sins of the world. 8212;including not just we God’s faithful people. But also all the people we look down on or are disgusted by. 8212;when can we? I’ve been in a pastoral relationship. With someone on the Sex Offender Registry for several years now. And I’ve been pondering for most of that time. But somehow a s...

Friday, April 18, 2014. Sermon on Matthew 7:15-29 on hypocrites and fruit. You guys, those hypocrites! Jesus is totally right. Arent’ they terrible, not practicing what they preach—. Why can’t they be consistent, why can’t they not be jerks? What are people hypocritical about? What do you see out there that gets your goat? So, out of curiosity, I Googled the phrase “Christians are hypocrites”. And the very first hit contained this quote:. Not surprising, maybe, but still painful, right? If we take Jesus ...

Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Sermon on Psalm 1, privilege, and racism. Psalm 1, has a lot of meat. It reads:. Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;. But their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. I’m into it. There’s a th...

http://justusetpeccator.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, January 27, 2013. Retreat address 3: Priscilla and Phoebe, Paul's Church Ladies. Growing up, I always thought of the church ladies in my Dad’s churches like the Dowager Countess in Downton Abbey. 8212;Maggie Smith at her accomplished, pinched, disapproving best. Were they getting wax out of folks’ robes or were any of them actively spreading the Gospel like Peter and Paul? Phoebe was one of this company of faithful leaders. She sat with other women and heard their joys and sorrows. She he...But t...

Wednesday, July 31, 2013. Sermon on Genesis 18:20-32. This story from Genesis is hilarious. 8220;That’s great, God, and pardon me for saying so, your Mightiness,. But what if we only find 35 of the 40 righteous people? Or Abraham as a toddler wheedling his dad into giving him more candy…. But it doesn’t stay hilarious long. Because Abraham is trying to head off a firebombing,. He’s trying to avoid Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In the neighboring town of Sodom. Abraham is negotiating not for his life. To avoid ...

Friday, February 15, 2013. Ash wednesday sermon on dirt. In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth,. The earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep,. While the breath of God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’ and there was light. And later on, the Lord God said, “Let there be dirt” and there was dirt. And then the Lord God sculpted a person from the dirt. 8212;scripture says “dust” but we all know. The breath of life;. Is the ...
