Newer posts →. June 13, 2010. The third year was… okay? Could have been better? It was decent. I think. By what measure do I judge how successful my year was? Grades on final exams? My students growth on standardized tests? Some other metric that exists only in my mind? Student evaluations were mostly positive. Those who disagree are eating away at me. Do I consider this a successful year- that most of my students felt comfortable asking questions in class? I don’t know. (. I have no idea. I liked that y...

Advice For New Teachers: Goals. Pick a piece of candy! July 2, 2012. I try to change seats often in my classes (every three weeks or so). Sometimes I choose their seats for them, but most of the time it is random. I usually use a deck of cards (well, part thereof), kids pick a card when they walk in and all of the Aces, Twos, … sit together. A few months ago, I for some reason had a lot of leftover candy. So I divided into groups. One of the five groups I created was this one:. I neither confirmed nor de...

Pick a piece of candy! Advice For New Teachers: Goals. July 1, 2012. Adding my (late) contribution to Letters to a First Year Teacher. To a new teacher,. As you plan for your first year, my advice to you is to have concrete goals — and very few of them. Some of us began our first year with goals such as:. All of my students will love math! My students will be excited, engaged, and enthralled every moment of every class period. Engagement is a good goal. As is excitement. Every moment? Pick one or two or ...

Mathalogical: Desperation

Little Classroom on the Prairie. Saturday, April 25, 2009. It started innocently. A student sighed saying she couldn't wait for graduation. I asked what she planned to do next year. The conversation quickly turned to what you're allowed do to on probation. You can go to school and do your basics. You cannot join the National Guard. Huh. Not information I was equipped with. And then I learned more. He had everything going for him," they say. But everything here isn't always enough. View my complete profile.

Little Classroom on the Prairie. Friday, January 30, 2009. Checking the Annual Report Off My To-Do List. I really like Dan Meyer's annual report contest. Even though I treat it more as a meme.) Despite it being a change in the calendar, January never feels like the change of year to me. My life calendar always seems to shift in the summer months. So pausing mid-year to reflect on the changes reveals interesting behavior patterns to myself. So for now, here you go. A few final reflections. I like not havi...

Little Classroom on the Prairie. Monday, May 25, 2009. Since starting the class two years earlier, I'd had plenty of opportunities to wonder: What is the value of a positive experience if it is only temporary? How do you weight the advantages against the disadvantages of affection, or of aspiration? Page 323, True Notebooks. Friday, May 22, 2009. Prayer from the Last Day of School. I picked up my copy during third period. There is now a photo on Bebo of me reading it to two of my Blueberry Girls. And hap...

Little Classroom on the Prairie. Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Is out of jail. Younger sister has graduated. She loved her first year of college. The guy from the video. Was back on leave from the army. His younger brother’s hair is long again. His son is a toddler now. The silent student transferred from the college where I visited her to one closer to home. She wanted to be able to visit for a couple of years, anticipating a greater distance when she goes to grad school. One of my blueberry girls. The teache...

Little Classroom on the Prairie. Thursday, June 18, 2009. The new teachers are here. Interviewing right now. (My students are waiting for reports on what they're like.) They're asking for advice, wanting to know what I've picked up out here. The best I'll offer, build your support network. And then expand it. Ain't that the way it goes? One minute you're trying to remember the name of that site. I immediately started building the connections. Joining conversations in the comments of my favorite blogs...

Coffee and Graph Paper: April 2009
http://coffeeandgraphpaper.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
Coffee and Graph Paper. Thursday, April 16, 2009. I like Sam Shah’s approach to teaching function inversion. It’s pretty much what I had intended to do this year, but somehow forgot about at some point. Hopefully writing these notes here will increase the odds that I get it right next time around. The original inspiration was Mr. K’s approach to solving two-step equations. And the following will make no sense without having read that entry, so do that first. Links to this post. Coffee and Graph Paper: December 2008

Coffee and Graph Paper. Sunday, December 7, 2008. Notes from the Saturday at Asilomar. 8220;Oh, I get. Yet, judging from what I’m doing it would seem I disagreed with all of the above. Somehow, all kinds of resolutions made late last year got lost in the flurry of starting up again this year, and I’ve found myself teaching in ways I had made definite decisions not to. So, what to do? Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Which is now discontinued. View my complete profile. Ms Math, Las Vegas.

Wednesday, February 20, 2013. High School Geometry Reorganization. In light of this contemplation, I went in search of pacing guides to revamp and chunk units for ease of understanding. I am extremely excited with my new plan. The units have been chunked and divided in half based on the number of days in each unit. This sequence will work even if we don't end of changing our schedule. Always downloading new cool stuff! Sunday, February 10, 2013. Here is a picture and the link. To download your own copy.
