Random Loot is Random? Why the truth is a lie thanks to sample sizes and psychology. In vanilla WoW you’d kill a raid-boss and it would drop around 4 epic items, for 40 raiders. It took 40 people in vanilla to get this. Considering each raider would have 16 slots worth of gear to be upgraded (not counting resist sets, off-spec, etc.), there were, at most 11 bosses at a given “tier,” and that a given boss could only be killed once per week, well… it took quite some time to gear a raid.
