Cooking at 5280: January 2011
http://cookingat5280.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, January 1, 2011. My mother used to make me eat black eyed peas on New Years Day. One for each year I'd lived plus one for good luck in the coming year. I hated black eyed peas as a kid, but now I know that the secret ingredient, as with so many foods, is bacon. 1 medium yellow onion. 2-4 slices of the thickest cut bacon you can find. 1/2 cup white wine. Salt, black pepper, red pepper to taste. 1/2 to 1 lb dry, presoaked, or canned black eyed peas. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
Cooking at 5280: Pork Chops with Apple Chutney and Roasted Sweet Potatoes
http://cookingat5280.blogspot.com/2010/05/pork-chops-with-apple-chutney-and.html
Tuesday, May 11, 2010. Pork Chops with Apple Chutney and Roasted Sweet Potatoes. A classic dish, ever so slightly modernized. I love apples with savory pork products and make all sorts of variations on the apples and pork combo every fall. (Okay, 90% of this is apples sauteed in bacon lard, but whatever.) I realize that it's May, but it's supposed to snow tonight, so cold-weather food feels appropriate. 1 tablespoon olive oil. 1 medium onion, diced. 2 apples, cored and sliced*. I personally like the text...
Cooking at 5280: No-Knead Bread at Altitude
http://cookingat5280.blogspot.com/2010/03/no-knead-bread-at-altitude.html
Saturday, March 6, 2010. No-Knead Bread at Altitude. Years and dove in. And the bread wasn't bad. Really, it wasn't. But it wasn't great, either. It was kind of dense and tough. I suspected this might have something to do with the fact that (1) I used all-purpose flour instead of bread flour, because that's what I had on-hand (2) I mixed it 2-to-1 with whole wheat flour, because I ran out of all-purpose (did I mention it was snowing? And (3) I was using a sea-level recipe at 5280 feet. Cotton towel. ...
Cooking at 5280: Gadgets
http://cookingat5280.blogspot.com/p/gadgets.html
I am not a huge fan of fancy kitchen gadgetry. I my kitchen is small, and I was a starving student until a year ago. I put together my first kitchen from thrift stores, for under $50. And even if I had all the space and money in the world, I still wouldn't think I needed an avocado slicer. (I already have one. It's called a "knife."). That said, there are a few things I think every kitchen needs, and several that aren't really necessary but that I love and would hate to live without. Here they are:.
Cooking at 5280: Weeknight Coq au Vin
http://cookingat5280.blogspot.com/2010/05/weeknight-coq-au-vin.html
Monday, May 3, 2010. Weeknight Coq au Vin. I love Coq au Vin, but most recipes turn it into an event. Here's a version that's simple enough to put together on a weeknight. I left work at 5; dinner was on the table by 7, even though I putzed around a bit. I served this with packet asparagus* and roasted potatoes.*. Cut the tough ends off, season with salt, pepper, thyme, and a squeeze of lemon juice, spread in 1-2 layers and wrap in foil, bake in oven at 200 for one hour. 1/2 lb mushrooms, sliced. Pork Ch...

Cooking as procrastination
Thursday, July 21. After my sad little post earlier this week where I fessed up to using tomato sauce from a jar (horror of horrors! The lovely and amazing Ahna sent me the link to Orangette's tomato sauce recipe. She is one of our favorite food bloggers (Remember these muffins. They are definitely next on my list.) and Ahna has impeccable taste, so I decided it was time to step up my game! When I'm in Minneapolis for Labor Day (Isaac Becker AND Italian? I based this off of the Orangette recipe, but twea...

Saturday, December 20, 2014. Surviving Christmas with a Maine Coon Kitten. Surviving Christmas With A Maine Coon Kitten. See our Christmas tree? Oh, the garland, the lights, and handmade salt dough ornaments from years gone by. How I wish I could tell you this is how our tree looks this year. I could tell you that. But, it wouldn't be true. This year, it's a different story. Can your see the gray and white blob jut under my husbands arm? Yeah, that's a 13 pound kitten in our tree! I wanted the hooks or o...

Cooking at Clark Towers – Home cook experiments with recipes and teaches others how to cook.
Cooking at Clark Towers. Home cook experiments with recipes and teaches others how to cook. March 18, 2018. March 17, 2018. I briefly looked into why this is called Texas sheet cake but there was no evidence to where or when this originally got it’s name that I could find. I did share this recipe a few years ago but I thought it needed to make another appearance. I strongly suggest you make this cake at least once in your life, though if you do, you will be making it again! Preheat oven to 400’F. Cup Cho...

April 28, 2009 — mcmolty. Sorry for not updating for a really long time, but something else has come up. I’m starting a restaurant! And as I try out recipes for the kitchen, I’ll post them here. But until then, this place will probably not be as active as you or I want it to be. February 27, 2009 — mcmolty. After I had baked my first loaf of bread, I started seeing something on all the recipes and directions for baking bread. 8220; Do not be afraid”. Anyway, Today I made up my very first bread recipe!
