Many inorganic phase-change materials (PCMs), including those used in CoolFlux, absorb water from their surroundings. This changes their chemical composition and phase-change properties. Thus, inorganic PCMs must be encapsulated to protect them. In order to reduce the complexity of CoolFlux processing, our team is designing a method to add CoolFlux directly to closed-cell polyurethane foam, an existing insulation material.

In order to be effective, phase-change materials (PCMs) need to be able to cycle back and forth between the solid and liquid phases. Thus, they can store heat and recharge daily for the lifetime of the building material. The CoolFlux additive for insulation is comprised of microparticles of inorganic phase-change materials. In contrast, most PCM-enhanced building materials currently available use organic PCMs. These are readily processed and reversibly undergo thermal cycling. However, they are flammable and made of expensive raw materials that must be highly purified. In addition, these building materials are often incompatible with existing construction processes.

Using finite-element simulations informed by differential scanning calorimetry tests of CoolFlux, we have shown that CoolFlux can provide up to 40% increased performance of polyurethane foam. However, the inexpensive raw materials and simple processing indicate that the cost to end-users need only increase by 20%. This will allow users to reduce the amount of foam needed to insulate a building and save money immediately.
