The frame on the ground is the back wall with a cutout hatch for easier coop clean up, and the front one is on top of the foundation with cutouts of our huge found windows and the chicken hatch. It is less than a month before the chicks arrive! Saturday, April 19, 2008. 4 The next step. The frames for them have been worked on all week and are almost done!

We started the weekend removing the rain covers and laying the roof planking. Memorial weekend arrived with unbeatable weather which allowed for good cooping time. Even with all the work to do, we did manage to get together with friends and family, which was great, and they lent a hand with hammering and staple gunning! I called to them, as I usually do, and heard the scampering sounds within as they queued up inside next to the hatch door. After opening it up, I like to stand back and watch them race out -their first breath of outdoor air for the day like the first they have ever had. Do the chickens remember being outside yesterday? As the temps get colder and the light diminishes, egg laying usually recedes -or so we have been told. So far, we have not found any change. A suburban New York family raises backyard chickens. Monday, March 23, 2009. Amazing, amazing, AMAZING! We incubated 12 eggs, 5 blue/green Ameraucana and 7 brown Cochin, Astraulorp, and Black Star. ALL 12 Hatched! After hand turning the eggs 3 times a day and maintaining the temperature and water levels inside, they began to pip (poke holes), zip (cut a line of holes across the shell) and hatch 19 days after incubation.
