Outdoor writer and photographer. With a bright light in his eye that always seemed to appear whenever he was outdoors, my grandfather took me up Skiddaw when I was eight. I’ve been wandering up and down hills ever since, some of them a little larger and farther from home. Mont Buet, France. Most of my hillwalking articles have been published in The Great Outdoors. These have included a number of Wild Walk guides, with routes on the edge of Dartmoor. One in the Lake District even incorporated a canoe trip.

Written in chalk on a slab of Cornish slate, one of our signs at the recent Bushcraft Show invited questions, any questions, on the subject of canoes or canoe camping. Our Bushcraft Show signs. Food choice and food preparation also featured high on the topic list (which was great, as Susannah and I like talking about camp food), and one of the questions we were asked more than once was whether we cooked on our Eldfell stove.

One rule seems to apply to any form of fishing small children are going to want to eat what they catch, whatever it is. This one was a little too small, and soon went back. One for the pot, or something like that. This one even had a sauce accompaniment. Peeled, and ready to eat. They were a generous lot those Jokkmokk lakeside visitors. I’ve since learned that many Sami consider perch the best eating fish in their waters. I might just have to agree.

Anyone lucky enough to visit Scotland will soon discover just how beautiful a country it is, and the uplifting experience isn’t just restricted to viewing the glory of its hills, lochs and glens from afar. A decade ago, at the stroke of a legislative pen, a rather wonderful change took place north of the border. With some perhaps unexpected revelations The Song of the British Paddle. During our initial five minutes on the water, in which we never put out anything like a normal working length of line, we landed and released four – three coalfish and a cod. The first of the many small fish we caught and released. It could only be Norway. Looking back to our campsite on the shore.
