Bye-Bye Shadowlands: The Question
http://byebyeshadowlands.blogspot.com/2014/11/the-question.html
Friday, November 21, 2014. I'm on a self-imposed solo "writer's retreat.". There was only one problem: the script sucked. Even when I spent virtually the next 12 months revising it, it still sucked. It was a great premise without a great story. And it centered on an interesting idea. Should I see this as a sign of what I should truly be doing? Except for this: There's that word, "achieve." Why do I use that word in describing this creative version of White People Problems that I struggle with? I honestly...

Tuesday, September 24, 2013. 25 Years from the Most Important Moment. It's been brought to my attention, and in retrospect it's amazing I didn't sense it on my own, that this week marks 25 years since the day that I and 30 other Notre Dame and St. Mary's students left on a Pan Am jet for the small village of Maynooth, Ireland. Yet, despite the fact that I recall this year as often as one remembers a departed family member, these aren't the things I think about. What I really remember are the walks.

Friday, May 27, 2011. Eulogy for a Grandmother. 8221;, her response was nonchalant: “Oh, that’s Don, the plumber. He seemed hungry.”. 8221; and “what were the names of your siblings? 8221;, it felt more like a test than a real conversation. So I decided to wing it. 8221;—Grandma Lou would let the question drift away and say, almost to herself: “I’ve lived a good life . ”. Posted by Marc Conklin. Friday, May 20, 2011. Or pride in the fact that he is choosing to be his own man? Posted by Marc Conklin. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Another Meditation on The Vault. Copy Curmudgeon (kinder, gentler grammar policing).

Wednesday, April 30, 2014. I started this blog as a think-out-loud tool for myself, and I've slowly let it slip into neglect (the fact that it's on Blogger and not Wordpress is a dead giveaway). Why did I sacrifice long-form thought on the altar of social media snark and snippetization? Who knows, but just this morning, I decided to go back and read my opening post, " When I Grow Up. And several things hit me. First: I wrote that piece seven years ago to the day. On April 30, 2007, I wrote:. I think it's...

Monday, April 18, 2011. Vertigo, Mr. Sunshine, and My Growing Impatience with Impatience. I've already seen Hitchcock's Vertigo at least six times, but seven couldn't hurt. I just saw it again . this time on the big screen at The Riverview in Minneapolis . and, nation, it's time we had a talk. With the exception of a few moments (like Jimmy Stewart yelling at Kim Novak's character that her hair color "can't matter to you! But one random scene really struck me this time. Probably all of the above, and so ...

Sunday, March 27, 2011. When I take in everything I see, hear and read, I basically have only two choices: I can take Shawn Mullins' sage advice and believe that "everything's going to be all right," or I can actually start believing that Armageddon is knocking at the door. The spirit of this sentiment is echoed by Michael Specter in his book, Denialism. To add more perspective, Bill Bryson (among others) has pointed out that more than 99 percent of all species that have ever existed are now extinct....

Friday, February 18, 2011. No Fly Zone Friday #8. Today gave me a glimpse of the impossible: being 25 and retired at the same time. I headed toward Minneapolis at about 8:00 with no plan, and after wasting precious minutes trying to find a hard copy New York Times. I am old), I ended up at French Meadow Bakery for breakfast. After that, it was time to visit the newest in the line of upscale, Clover-brew coffee shops, Dogwood, in the shockingly remodeled and suddenly very sunny Calhoun Square. Short of a ...

Monday, June 11, 2012. When analyzing a Wes Anderson movie, it almost seems obligatory to state upfront whether you're "in" or "out." Are you a fan or detractor, a believer or a skeptic? It seems more appropriate to consider whether you're "fluent," because Wes Anderson seems to be a language unto himself, each of his movies a different republic in the linguistic empire. Monday, January 2, 2012. Damn You, Dawkins. All of this made me a bit reluctant when a CSC (that’s Coffee Shop Colleague) named Stuart handed me The Selfish Gene. Is still considered Dawkins’ seminal work. Yet I braced myself for the possible discovery that Dawkins is nothing more than the Oxford-educated version of the Pale Ale Pontificator. I was wrong. The Selfish Gene. Second, its gene-centricity goes far beyond the typical news item about the latest study identifying “the gene responsible for ...
