I hadn’t heard of it till Cheryl had mentioned it, but Googling revealed important finds included pottery dated from the Neolithic, and evidence of an Attic “cult’ of a Goddess named Akakalis, probably a descendant of Persephone and of Minoan origin. Thursday, 15 December 2011. Santa Fe, New Mexico. Big expectations, but little time! Bit of a shock to meet a real town with dual carriageways. El Rey is priced modestly among the many motels on the busy road out, but it offered us a haven of gardens, trees, bird song and a delightful outdoor hot tub. We had an dinner of delicious tamales at La Fonda’s exquisite stained glass walled restaurant. Apart from that it was very classy window shopping. Each year to supply their taverna and an infinite number of weddings and baptisms. Today, I saw how it was done. Arrival of the first grapes. Wading in grape sludge. Skins and pips for raki making. Oma makes grape strudel. Pork and celery at lunch. Straining juice for grape syrup - it will boil on a fire all evening.
