Fireflies and Snow: March 2010
http://firefliesandsnow.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Include local eateries, and often the eatery is more important than the program's destination; sometimes, it is the destination. And every dish is relished. With the first bite it is "uma'! Or "oishii- honto ni oishii" (both mean "tasty", "delicious"). Faces contorted in the most sublime pleasure. Women titter and blush, while men sit back and let out sighs after each bite. Next is tofu. I know, boring, right? Sunday, March 14, 2010. 20 - Bicycles and Transportation. With signs...

Fireflies and Snow: August 2010
http://firefliesandsnow.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Weston Bend State Park August 22. Today was a pleasant, fairly easy day. My actual travel mileage was about 40 miles, maybe, but I did a lot of pottering around Watkins Mill and then Weston Bend and the city of Weston. Another miserable road today, 92. It started off cool today, but got quite hot, and I was struggling for the last few miles. I hope to do the same (or a version) in other parts of the US, then the world, as soon as I can. Sunday, August 29, 2010. The storm- the fi...

Fireflies and Snow: Jimbocho, Ueno, and the Last Samurai
http://firefliesandsnow.blogspot.com/2005/11/jimbocho-ueno-and-last-samurai.html
Tuesday, November 08, 2005. Jimbocho, Ueno, and the Last Samurai. Just so you know, Jimbocho, the book district, has nothing to do with The Last Samurai. But I like the district, so I took a picture and thought I should include it. On the far right are the complete works of Izumi Kyoka. For only 18,000 Yen! The next couple of photos do. Have something to do with the movie. It is, of course, far more complicated than this. But I have been struck by this interest in the past. I suppose it is like c...You p...

Fireflies and Snow: I made a good decision for once! - Council Grove Lake to Marion Lake
http://firefliesandsnow.blogspot.com/2012/11/i-made-good-decision-for-once-council.html
Friday, November 09, 2012. I made a good decision for once! Council Grove Lake to Marion Lake. I started the day thinking I might just stay in Council Grove. It was a free site, I wasn't in that big a hurry. And the wind was just as miserable as the day before. So I finally gave in to these cruel urges and decided to keep moving. I'd planned to head to McPherson Lake, east of McPherson. This meant more jockeying with gravel, so I really wanted a different option. I say "if" because I had begun to think o...

Fireflies and Snow: Tough day - Pomona Lake to Council Grove Lake
http://firefliesandsnow.blogspot.com/2012/11/tough-day.html
Thursday, November 08, 2012. Tough day - Pomona Lake to Council Grove Lake. Donkeys know how to hide. 119 km/ 74 mi Today started out well enough. It was cold and cloudy, but I felt more confident on the bike because I'd moved some items around in the front panniers and it seemed easier to keep control of the bike. Maybe I got cocky. Dinner after a long day. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Danni and Teds Adventures. At the new office. This ones real. In a manner of speaking. Hey there! Just so you kn...

Fireflies and Snow: January 2012
http://firefliesandsnow.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, January 22, 2012. Letter from the mountains. Hey, man,. It's been a long time! I was glad to receive your letter. Mail doesn't often come up here in the mountains, and it leaves even less often! So this will reach you some time after your generous message. Sorry about that. Yeah, I moved up here to become a mushroom hunter a few years ago. You shouldn't be so surprised! No, it's not a brisk trade in mushrooms, you're right! As I watch her at night I listen to the mountains: their solidity is so h...

Fireflies and Snow: May 2011
http://firefliesandsnow.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 31, 2011. An interlude: a day in Tokyo. I don't know that I've ever gone through a day in Tokyo here in this blog. Sometimes I wake up and think, "maybe I'll head over to Ueno," or "it'd be great to do some people-watching in Omotesando". Then I remember I'm 5000 miles away. I'm kind of curious, thinking now from a lounge chair here in Kansas, if I can recreate for myself the environments of Tokyo again. My usual breakfast back when I could easily find it. Seedlings I just bought that weeken...

Fireflies and Snow: Goodbye! - Lawrence to Pomona
http://firefliesandsnow.blogspot.com/2012/11/pomona.html
Thursday, November 08, 2012. 75 km/47 mi Today was a good start. I rode with a few friends to Well's Overlook (nearly blowing a gasket on the way up the hill), then met a few more friends there. We ate bagels while we talked about my trip. People slowly said goodbye one after one, then Billy and I rode a bit more together. We parted ways near Clinton dam. Last goodbye for a while. Pamona's 110 mile park is nice enough. No one's here: it's Sunday and getting COLD! In 110 Mile Park. Update: Just as I was a...
