Corkscrews & Cutlery: A Yellow Cab in Paris
http://corkscrewsandcutlery.blogspot.com/2011/08/blinding-sunlight-like-flash-of-cameras.html
Tastebud tales by Louis Anthony Woodbine. Wednesday, 17 August 2011. A Yellow Cab in Paris. Blinding sunlight like the flash of a camera’s bulb rushes through my mind. Blinding sunlight, searing heat and buildings of honey hued limestone, dusty and dry. A hot cityscape revealing itself, contrasting with the cool marble shaded concourse of Bordeaux station in the late 1980’s. Backpacking with two friends (I wonder what happened to them? I think that would be understating what lies beneath. The tomato was ...
Corkscrews & Cutlery: June 2011
http://corkscrewsandcutlery.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Tastebud tales by Louis Anthony Woodbine. Thursday, 2 June 2011. It has been a long wait; a long, cold and damp wait for spring. Bright colours now bring the countryside to life:. I am trying hard to get inspired, to cook something that matches the change of season. A hot sun tells us that winter has been banished; hearty, slow cooked stews and heavy red wines are too rich to contemplate; lighter, greener, refreshing meals come to mind and yet. ah! Chicken stock (I have made my own) 850ml 1 ½ pints.
Corkscrews & Cutlery: July 2011
http://corkscrewsandcutlery.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Tastebud tales by Louis Anthony Woodbine. Monday, 18 July 2011. Life can be perfect (part 1 - the champagnes). 8220;Well” to quote Shirley Valentine, “I won a competition, you see”. A writing competition for Bollinger’s Life Can Be Perfect competition to describe in a short amount of words a perfect moment in time. I went back to my former life in Paris, but just transposed the beaker of cheap Rhône with a glass of champagne. No Neither can I. That is why I am still pinching myself a week later. Truffle ...
Corkscrews & Cutlery: Friction Burns
http://corkscrewsandcutlery.blogspot.com/2013/02/friction-burns.html
Tastebud tales by Louis Anthony Woodbine. Saturday, 16 February 2013. Jeg vil lave mad til alle. Or something like that). The poet Burns brings an upside to all this bleakness. As an ‘Anglo Angus’ (someone who dons a plaid skirt and goes commando once a year) I feel I should do something for Burn’s Night. I have game for a stew in the freezer (I bought it earlier! But want to do something different to accompany the meat, something traditional but with a slightly Gothick. 1 Celery stick diced. 1 Rosemary ...
Corkscrews & Cutlery: March 2011
http://corkscrewsandcutlery.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Tastebud tales by Louis Anthony Woodbine. Sunday, 6 March 2011. Little satisfaction in Little Venice. Buses, taxis, maybe a Boris Bike, the Bakerloo had closed, so arriving on time meant a twenty first century version of “Monte Carlo or Bust”. With all the chaos, two of the party were unable to make it without some Herculean attempt to cross London and, smile on my face, I was left to entertain the girlfriends. I have to admit to being wary of gastro pubs. They leave me very confused. Is it a pub? Howeve...

Food is good: Plums are not the only fruit
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2012/09/plums-are-not-only-fruit.html
Monday, 17 September 2012. Plums are not the only fruit. The last couple of posts have been on stuff to do with plums, lots of plums (and there’s still jam and tart to come…), but I wouldn’t want you to go away with the idea that this blog is all, and only, about plums these days. Of course it’s not. And of course this time of year, the end of the summer and beginning of autumn, is famously the most abundant time ofyear. For all sorts of fruit and veg – not to mention wild mushrooms and game. Speaking fo...
Food is good: Al fresco Steak Salad
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2012/08/al-fresco-steak-salad.html
Wednesday, 22 August 2012. Al fresco Steak Salad. Having spent so much of this year having a bit of a moan about the weather, I feel rather bad about having had nothing to say (on the blog at least) since the summer came good, but what with a week’s holiday, the Olympics. And starting a new job. Since last I posted, I don’t seem to have much time to cook, let alone write it up. Innovation is all very well, and there’s always a place, indeed a need, for it – but old favourites are good too. I served up a ...
Food is good: February 2012
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Friday, 17 February 2012. A new definition of comfort food: Smoked Haddock Risotto. A couple of posts back. I wrote about how, at this time of year and with the arrival of (finally! Some proper winter weather, then food-wise it was all about big meaty stews and hearty soups, and then I went ahead and wrote up a chickpea and spinach dish just to be contrary/prove there was an alternative. That last bit was plainly unnecessary. Looking back over the posts I’ve published since the turn of the year. Anyway, ...
Food is good: Samba Beef: Brazilian ribs (from Scotland)
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2012/09/samba-beef-brazilian-ribs-from-scotland.html
Friday, 28 September 2012. Samba Beef: Brazilian ribs (from Scotland). It’s just coming up to two years since I started this blog. In fact it will be two years to the day next Monday since I uploaded my first proper post, the very first sentence of which ended “ as I write this, it is bleak outside”. Bleak being to put it mildly. That first proper blog post. Was about wild mushrooms, and what a bumper year it was for them in 2010. Not exclusive to this year. Those same weather conditions will almost cert...
Food is good: November 2011
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 22 November 2011. Autumn at last: Quince jelly and old medlars. Mists, mellow fruitfulness and game birds, which I get the impression seem to be particularly abundant and cheap this year – I came across partridges being sold in the Bloomsbury (of all places) farmers market for just £2.50 a bird last week. Unfortunately just after I’d done my weekly meat shop (and with the freezer still chocker with Bert and Ernie. Of December last year, which I see from the date stamps on my photos was the very ...

Food is good: Plum(p up the) Jam
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2012/09/plump-up-jam.html
Thursday, 20 September 2012. Plum(p up the) Jam. I guess it’s time to finish off those plums. You remember the plums, the ones from my friend Lindsay’s tree? The ones I made into two kinds of sauce to go with duck. Or stir fried pork and beef since), and chutney. And a tart (that I still have to write up)? And, as I promised, jam? I did a fair bit of research, and pretty much all the recipes I found were, broadly speaking, much the same - I settled on the Cottage Smallholder’s version. By and large, I...
Food is good: December 2012
http://sebastianroach.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 12 December 2012. How about some Bolly? You may have noticed I haven't been blogging recently (or probably not - my life clearly doesn't revolve around it, I certainly wouldn't expect yours to.), but I did have an absolutely fabulous opportunity to visit the House of Bollinger. A while back, and write it up for Civilian. The brand spanking new online luxury lifestyle magazine started by my good friend Mark C O'Flaherty). You can read all about it here.
