An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft
Cornish Woodland Workshop: October 2012
http://cornishwoodlandworkshop.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft. Tuesday, 23 October 2012. Cruck barn in crenver grove. 65279;. At long last I am finally getting round to putting up some stuff about the timber framing project I've been running in my local woodland this summer/autumn. Pat cutting a housing. Most of the work we did would have been very familiar to a carpenter of medieval times, with the use of plumb bob scribing being used throughout. This allows for very accurate jointing of timbers, despite...
Cornish Woodland Workshop: November 2012
http://cornishwoodlandworkshop.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft. Sunday, 11 November 2012. Autumn is truly here and the leaves are falling, so its time to get the roof covered, starting with nailing down battens and making shingles. The rafters and batten are cut from local larch by Jo sawmills, and they gave us some really nice stuff. 4"x 3" rafters and 2 x1" batten. You make footholds as you go. The ends get trimmed evenly once all is nailed down. We cross-cut the bolts to the required length, then split them down ...
Cornish Woodland Workshop: Laying the shingles

An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft. Sunday, 5 May 2013. Not done a great deal of work on the barn roof over this long, wet and cold winter; certainly not as much as we had planned, but today was a beautifully warm and sunny May day and we are starting to make real progress on one side of the roof. Over the winter we felled a really nice straight grained, knot free sweet-chestnut that should hopefully provide us with all the good quality stuff we need to complete the roof. While the team g...
Cornish Woodland Workshop: Spooning
http://cornishwoodlandworkshop.blogspot.com/2013/08/spooning.html
An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft. Tuesday, 20 August 2013. I find that my spoon-carving is like many things in life. My enthusiasm for it comes and goes for no particularly obvious reason, but I find myself having times of almost no carving, followed by periods of intense whittling and playing around with forms and ideas. All sorts of things might prompt a period of carving, a new tool, finding some interesting wood, or even just sitting round a fire. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Cornish Woodland Workshop
An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft. Thursday, 3 October 2013. I love this image of the parachute we use for shelter. In fairness it was probably more effective as shade than rain shelter this summer, but it is an excellent, cheap and easy to set up solution to shelter in the woods. Tuesday, 20 August 2013. All sorts of things might prompt a period of carving, a new tool, finding some interesting wood, or even just sitting round a fire. Craft in general has, or can have this pleasing aspec...
