A Ministry of the Strange. Down in the south-eastern corner of the Iberian peninsula is a weird and strangely magical place called Cortijo Grande. It is a place with a curious history, a bizarre recent past, and an extraordinary current situation. I live there. It is, at one time, a place of magnificently fulfilled dreams, as well as the very stuff of nightmares. Weird is my preferred word for it. Weird. But it’s a special weird. It is just plain weird. It’s a rural community round here and so animals are never really elevated to the status of pet. If they work, or produce, they’re useful. A Ministry of the Strange. Kiku is our third dog. She was found in a cardboard box that had been dumped outside the vets in Turre, which is the nearest village to us, just outside the valley.
