Monday, August 3, 2015. The Top Three Greatest North American Garage Singles Ever Are. You know the story by now. If not, it goes something like this. Back in October of 2014, On The Flip-Side innocently undertook a region by region Battle of the Garage Band singles. At that moment we failed to understand the scope of our endeavor. Coming in at No. 1 is The Chocolate Watchband's swan song of a single, Are You Gonna Be There. On the A-side and No Way Out. On the A-side and Tried To Hide. Links to this post.

Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Round 2 of the Battle of the Garage Bands Bracket: The Chocolate Watchband v The Ugly Ducklings. Round 8 is in the books. The representatives from Texas, The 13th Floor Elevators, bested the kings of the Pacific Northwest, The Sonics. It was hard for all of us to send a band like The Sonics packing, but that is the nature of the competition, isn't it? With a flip-side of No Way Out. With a flip-side of That's Just A Thought I Had In My Mind. This Canuck of a single has bested th...

http://ontheflip-side.blogspot.com/2015/01/texas-spotlight-13th-floor-elevators.html
Friday, January 30, 2015. Texas Spotlight: The 13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me/Tried To Hide. The region by region Battle of the Garage Bands moves on to Texas. It is a documented fact (from the1966 Census of Garage Bands) that every kid in Texas between the age of 13 and 23 was in no less than three garage bands at each time. Even that weird kid, Marvin, from Waco. He was in three bands just like everybody else. It's a fact. Look it up. You're Gonna Miss Me. I gave you the warning. Until nex...

Today we travel to Tacoma, Washington where we have the garage legends of all garage legends, The Sonics. So much has been written about them, and so much about their songs that I'll just say this. The Sonics were a tour de force. Our songs from them today are their 5th single (actually 4.5 release) and came out in November of 1965. Phantom Lady T...

Five years ago we wrote extensively about The Misunderstood (specifically the flip-side of their debut single for Fontana, Who Do You Love. We turn today to their second single, Children Of The Sun/I Unseen. The A-Side, Children Of The Sun. Two monumen...

Tuesday, May 5, 2015. Northern California Spotlight: The Chocolate Watchband - Are You Gonna Be There/No Way Out. Back to San Jose, California for more of our Nor Cal region of the epic Battle of the Garage Bands. And even vocal songs with a different singer (think Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go! Are You Gonna Be There. The Flip-Side of Are You Gonna Be There. Is the excellent quasi-instrumental, No Way Out. That song gets an Ed Cobb credit for composer. That said, credible claims by the band suggest t...
