Tuesday, 23 February 2016. The view from the railway, nearer the station, is really grand. In the foreground we have the river Shin, with the woods and policies of Achany and Gruids. Behind these, and stretching from the south in a line to the north-east, we have the mountains of Ross, and of the west and north of Sutherland rising, pile upon pile, in towering splendour'. Tourists' Guide, 1883, Hew Morrison. See labels on right to view other pages in Lairg. The Duke of Sutherland’s Memoirs.
