Cottenie lab: Variation decomposition is a zombie idea?
http://www.cottenielab.org/2013/01/variation-decomposition-is-zombie-idea.html
University of Guelph, community ecology, metacommunity dynamics, teaching, fun. Thursday, January 10, 2013. Variation decomposition is a zombie idea? Another post as a response to something written by Jeremy Fox! Original argument by Dr. Fox. Correlation does not equal causation. Eg abundance in species over time. 2 species, abundances not correlated. Species abundances correlated with weather. Dr Fox’s conclusion: this is wrong. Correlation is not prediction of density dependence (example from economics).

University of Guelph, community ecology, metacommunity dynamics, teaching, fun. Thursday, July 19, 2012. Colonization rates and species richness. Our first publication from the amazing spanish pond system set-up by Andy Green. And his group, but especially with the hard work of Dagmar Frisch, who has the patience of a saint to keep collaborating with me: "Strong Spatial Influence on Colonization Rates in a Pioneer Zooplankton Metacommunity". Available in the supplemental material. Posted by Karl Cottenie.

Cottenie lab: Synchrony in metacommunities
http://www.cottenielab.org/2013/01/synchrony-in-metacommunities.html
University of Guelph, community ecology, metacommunity dynamics, teaching, fun. Monday, January 21, 2013. A new year, a new publication, this time with Shubha and Jurek: " Population synchrony decreases with richness and increases with environmental fluctuations in an experimental metacommunity. In Oecologia. We continued our work with specialization in metacommunities, but this time looked at the implications on population synchrony. We found, as predicted, that:. This could, of course, raise the questio...

The Three Planktoneers: November 2010
http://dabluff.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Musings from the field. Tuesday, November 16, 2010. Maybe the idea of "applied" science is a bit of a buzz phrase.like "sustainable" or "green". But I think that it is pretty clear when some research or an idea comes along that has important implications for a community, area, demographic etc. That is why I would like to introduce this article (from Science) on fog harvesting. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The original 3 planktoneers. Erinn, Ingrid and Amanda- summer 2009. Tracks of the "Arctic Fox".
The Three Planktoneers: July 2010
http://dabluff.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Musings from the field. Monday, July 26, 2010. Our field season has become increasingly busy over the last few weeks but I wanted to take some time to talk a little about two events we have had here in the last 10 days. EVENT 1: Research in Action Tour. My site was the first on the tour and it was great to be waiting there and all of a sudden have 2 buses and a convoy of vehicles show up! EVENT 2: 2nd Annual CNSC Science Olymp-a-thon. As you can see the competition gets pretty intense. The way things go.
The Three Planktoneers: June 2009
http://dabluff.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Musings from the field. Monday, June 29, 2009. Polar bear dates and Willie. But we have been unlucky thus far. We have, however, been able to get a nice long look at one of the littler guys.a cyclopoid copepod whom we have named Willie:. Found on a caterpillar, which had been caught in a pitfall trap set by Jay (a godwit researcher on the other side of our lab bench), Willie provided upwards of an hour of microscopic amusement. July 1st - mine, and July 12th - Erinn's). Sunday, June 28, 2009. Next activi...
The Three Planktoneers: August 2010
http://dabluff.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Musings from the field. Saturday, August 21, 2010. My time is coming to a close.but not yet! Well I wasn't sure that I would get a final blog in before leaving but as we are looking at a 12 hour train delay here the time seemed right for a summary and some thank-yous. I've had a very productive and enjoyable field season this year, and really got a chance to be a part of the larger community up here. Thanks to Brittany and Leah, field team extraordinaire! And now for some numbers:. Days in the field: 82.
The Three Planktoneers: October 2010
http://dabluff.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
Musings from the field. Sunday, October 31, 2010. What do we do with all that science? One of the great things about being a grad student in a lab or research group is the dialogue you have with other grad students. Ingrid (one of the original planktoneers), has been away at Lakehead University this semester planning her PhD project and taking an environmental ethics course. She has provided some initial insights here. Alas, not sure if I have a picture that goes with this posting. Filled with ideas of t...
The Three Planktoneers: February 2011
http://dabluff.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Musings from the field. Sunday, February 27, 2011. Many of you have probably seen the comic "The Science News Cycle" from phd comics. I thought it would be fun to recreate the above comic with insertions from my own research (i.e. this is what could happen with my research.well ok, only if it was high profile enough to get picked up by the U of G's PR department):. No matter what type of research you are doing. Think about where it is going and who could use it. Saturday, February 26, 2011. Needless to s...

http://dabluff.blogspot.com/2011/03/gordon-street-hill.html
Musings from the field. Monday, March 21, 2011. The Gordon Street Hill. Almost everyday I bike (ok in winter I walk) up the hill to the university. Earlier this year some wonderfully encouraging signs appeared on hydro poles lining the bike lane. And "You're almost there! Well, eventually those disappeared, but this week were replaced with several signs with slogans such as the one below (top sign):. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The original 3 planktoneers. Musings from the field. Friday, March 4, 2011. More in the R Art Series. The great thing about this plot is it actually sort of does what it is supposed to (guess)! And you learn a word in Spanish (Fecha= date). So to my friend and her newly minted trials and tribulations with R- Great job so far! And I'll get back to the rest of the help I said I'd do.when I'm done procrastinating here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The original 3 planktoneers. Erinn, Ingrid and Amanda- summer 2009.
