A world devoid of colour. October 26, 2014. October 27, 2014. If the world was devoid of colour what would I do? I would have to get used to a tasteful black and white blog for a start! My wardrobe would be the height of fashion for once in trendy shades of black and grey with white accents. I could get used to black and white food I think… but I couldn’t manage without. Colour in the garden. I would miss the brilliant reds of of succulent spring tulips which last for just a few days. Colour in the garden.

Commonly called Love in a Mist, Nigella damascena is classic English country garden plant…. Actually it seems that Nigella is native to much warmer places in Southern Europe (such as Spain) North Africa and Syria. These beautiful flowers were introduced to the UK in the Elizabethan era during the 16. Century they seem to like it here too!

Growing Flowers in Central Florida. October in the Garden. October 29, 2016. It’s so lovely to feel a chill in the air in the early mornings, a sign that our heat and humidity are past and we can look forward to cooler and drier days. Here and there are a few signs of autumn. A few of my orchids which live outside most of the summer under the shade of some trees are starting to flower. This one looks a fitting color with the lichens, silver bark and air plant. Plumbago is just that perfect shade of blue!

As we were close to a frost twice this week, they suddenly all decided to drop their leaves and the lawn now looks very autumnal! I have really been loving the Hyacinths. Even before they are fully up and open they are so pretty. I heven tucked a few into a few little mercury glasses. Even just one gives of such a powerful fragrance. I have added some silver birch twigs into the pots too because Tulips tend to get a bit floppy....
