Courtney's Major American Writers Blog: February 2010

http://www.courtneybb.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 25, 2010. A Whisper in the Dark. Thursday, February 18, 2010. John Van Trompe is another example of the reoccurring theme of “good.” He spent all of his money so that he could build a secret place in the woods for his slaves. As George came to see Tom right before he was sent away, he said to the trader, “I should think you’d be ashamed to spend all your life buying men and women, and chaining them like cattle! I should think you’d feel mean! Thursday, February 11, 2010. Century, we se...

Thursday, February 25, 2010. A Whisper in the Dark. February 26, 2010 at 10:10 PM. I really like how you pointed out Sybils weird relationship with her uncle, and how it connected to her perceptions. For me, this somewhat inappropriate relationship was the first red-flag on Sybils judgment and mind. I dont know how much of this ties to her mental insanity in the insane asylum/house, but its interesting to think about. Great job! February 28, 2010 at 12:27 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Courtney's Major American Writers Blog: Little Lord Fauntleroy

http://www.courtneybb.blogspot.com/2010/03/little-lord-fauntleroy.html

Thursday, March 25, 2010. As I was reading Little Lord Fauntleroy, I was amazed how different Burnett described and explained childhood of a young boy. We haven’t seen anything like it; In fact, Ragged Dick was the opposite of Cedric. Like many others, I automatically assumed Frances Burnett was a male. Because symbolizes the Revolutionary War and the relationship between Americans and the British in such depth lead me to automatically assume that she was a male. March 28, 2010 at 5:18 PM. Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Gilman and Chopin

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/04/gilman-and-chopin.html

Monday, April 5, 2010. We've spent a lot of time this semester discussing authorship- what it means to be an author vs. a writer, how gender constructs our idea of an author, and how some authors become "major" while others remain "minor"- which has been both fruitful and engaging. But now I'd like to turn our discussion to an element of literature that doesn't receive a whole lot of attention: the reader. Look for more details? Or are your reading habits exactly the same? Welcome to our English 20503 cl...

Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Little Lord Fauntleroy

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/03/little-lord-fauntleroy.html

Tuesday, March 23, 2010. We had a great beginning discussion of Frances Hodgson Burnett's Little Lord Fauntleroy. In class today, and I'd like to continue it here on our blogs. I did a little definitive research, and it turns out that. Frances Hodgson Burnett is, indeed, a female author. I'm reading this text for the first time along with you, and as you know I had been under the impression she was a man! How does a text change when we find out that an author is male or female? And what if we can't tell?

Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Tom Sawyer

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/03/tom-sawyer.html

Tuesday, March 9, 2010. We had an excellent discussion today, and in light of that productive conversation, I'd like to invite you to continue it here. We addressed issues of boyhood, and city vs. country, and North vs. South. We also talked about national parenting, which can transcend just Twain's text to include others from this semester. Please select a passage from Tom Sawyer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Welcome to Major American Writers. Resources in American Literature.

Monday, April 19, 2010. Optional Extra Credit Blog. In this final, optional, extra credit blog, please compare "Sissy" to one of our other primary text this semester. We discussed on Thursday how "Sissy" complicates our prescriptive thinking, so you may consider exploring this in your blog posting. But you are welcome to use any kind of compare/contrast construction you'd like. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Welcome to Major American Writers. Resources in American Literature. http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/03/nineteenth-century-childrens.html

Wednesday, March 24, 2010. I mentioned in class that in addition to novels, there was a wealth of children's periodicals (think Highlights. And The Youth's Companion. These publications were wildly successful, and you'll find short stories from many of the authors we've encountered this semester. We'll do some work to find these next week when we meet with the Humanities librarian, but if you'd like to do some work now, these titles should aid your search. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Tuesday, April 24, 2007. Divorce and the loss of a spouse. The first article for this week was written by Stephanie Coontz and entitled, "Putting Divorce in Perspective." In this article Coontz looks at how divorce affects children and what factors account for the variation in these affects.
