Courtney Skott - Cloud Bed

84" l x 64" w x 82.25" h. Plywood, casters, steel rod, hardware. The Cloud Bed is inspired by Ming Dynasty-era Chinese alcove beds, and the idea of the bed as a "room within a room." Here the form is updated, and the mobility provided by the casters lends itself to flexible, open-plan contemporary living spaces. Collection of Sara Morishige and Evan Williams. Courtney Skott - Houndstooth Screen

76" h x 18.5" w x 5/8" d each panel. This screen is inspired by the classic black-and-white houndstooth check, which has its origin in Scottish and British tweeds. Here the pattern is blown up in scale and translated as positive and negative space. The hugely blown-up scale of the pattern morphs dressmaker details into computer-age iconography — it looks like an 80s-era video game. The panels pivot freely on brass pins in inset sockets. 525" l x 15" d x 17.5" h. Plywood, walnut veneer. A previous piece, the Map Cabinet. Was the starting point for the Corrugated Bench. Working within the constraints of the bending jigs created for the cabinet, the bench explores other options in materials, joinery, and construction methods. The screen-printed pattern is a Chantilly lace, deconstructed and re-formed into a repeat pattern based on the grain in the walnut veneer. Prototype, not for sale. Courtney Skott - Map Cabinet

34" h x 45" w x 14" d. Birch plywood, silk screen. The Map Cabinet has its origin in my ongoing interest in the aesthetic forms of honeycombs and corrugations, and how those forms are being used in new textiles, constructions and technologies. The cabinet appears as a sliced section of a larger corrugated structure, and functions as one too - the structural integrity of the piece relies not on glue, but rather on the compression of bent plywood pieces slotted into a frame.

Hey guys I was wondering what you thought about having a weekly design prompt. Each week someone posts a topic and then during that week people post their sketches/ideas for that topic. This way we can look at each other's stuff, give crits, etc. Cool gadget. . . but can it be real? Has a set of cad renderings showing how it could be made, (which are much more clear than the engineery youtube. Animation) but it seems extremely intricate. inspiring anyhow. I'd rather just share the pixes and call it a day!
