We thought for sure it had been there since cowboy days; maybe even a hundred years! Saturday, September 24, 2011. I-10 at Holt, 2011 and 1938. The first divided highway between the east San Gabriel Valley and the Pomona Valley was built in 1934. It was called Arroyo Avenue, and was designated as part of U.S. Highway 99. In 1957, US-99 was widened and became the San Bernardino Freeway, and when it was added to the Interstate Highway System in the early 1960s, it became what we know today as Interstate 10 (I-10). The Covina Valley Historical Society dedicated its small community museum on January 14, 1979. It has been opened free of charge every Sunday from 1-3 pm ever since. Erected in 1911, the Firehouse is located directly behind Covina City Hall at 125 East College Street just east of Citrus Avenue in the heart of Covina's historic downtown district.
