Translation

http://www.craigepplin.com/translation.html

I've done translations from Spanish and Portuguese, and I have worked with a number of genres&#8212poetry, manifestos, essays, opera, and an unclassifiable collage of fragments. These are some of my favorite passages, first in my translation and then in the original, each preceded by a short gloss. Anonymous, General History. This fragment is from a motley selection of texts compiled. C&#233sar Aira, "The Wicker Trumpet". I translated this essay, originally written in 1995, for The Coffin Factory. Poetry...

Here's a list of some recent work, with links when available. And also my CV. Which I'll update soon. Two reviews, one on Roberto Bola&#241o. And another on Alejandro Zambra. In Music and Literature. Mario Bellatin and the Data Imaginary, Revista de Estudios Hisp&aacutenicos. Late Book Culture in Argentina. Sound and Space in The Hour of the Furnaces. Studies in Spanish and Latin American Cinemas. Concrete Scrawls: The Wires and Words of Le&#243n Ferrari, Third Text. Puppets Are Not People.

About me

http://www.craigepplin.com/bio.html

I live in Portland, Oregon, and work at Portland State University. I love Portland, but also like getting out of town, either to places bigger and brighter or to areas mostly empty of humans (which are equally big and bright, just differently so). I've been here since 2009, except for one year in New York, and at Portland State since 2012. Most days, I spend my time reading, writing, and teaching. Also cooking, walking, and making things (or trying to).

5

Teaching

http://www.craigepplin.com/teaching.html

I think that the point of a humanities education is to work on one's expression, making it more precise, articulate, and capacious. And you only learn to articulate ideas and emotions by articulating them, which is why I try to cultivate a participatory dynamic in the classroom&#8212an atmosphere that centers on the experiences of reading, listening, and viewing, with lots of space for discussion and debate.

Deleuze with Darío | Urbanities, the annex

https://urbanitiesannex.wordpress.com/2013/11/21/deleuze-with-dario

Urbanities, the annex. That proliferation is threatening precisely because the simulacrum deceives. It is strategic. It does not seek resemblance as an end, only as a means. As Brian Massumi wrote, in a gloss on Deleuze’s essay,. An insect that mimics a leaf does so not to meld with the vegetable state of its surrounding milieu, but to reenter the higher realm of predatory animal warfare on a new footing. Y no hallo sino la palabra que huye,. La iniciación melódica que de la flauta fluye. Experiment: to ...

Urbanities, the annex. Never fully becomes it. Pure actuals do not exist–I don’t have the exact quote here, but he writes something roughly equivalent to that. December 12, 2013. 2 Comments to “Virtuality”. December 13, 2013 at 10:14 pm. Dude, didn’t see this until I had already published my last post. I agree with most everything here, except that genotype or phenotype should not be taken as “ideal” states. They’re thoroughly material, real. December 13, 2013 at 10:34 pm. Simulacrum as Material | Urbanities, the annex

https://urbanitiesannex.wordpress.com/2013/12/02/simulacrum-as-material

Urbanities, the annex. I think this recent spate of conversation on this Annex is finally pushing Urbanities to the elaboration of its purpose: namely, to uncover the underlying structure of the “soft architecture” called “global ecology.” Craig might disagree with me on this point, and the following as well: that this underlying soft-architectural structure is not. And if I understand Craig’s last long post to the Annex ( Deleuze with Darío. Is not formal. It’s simulacral. Is worldly, not other-wordly, ...

Portfolio of development and design. Dealing With Rails 4.1 Enums in Views. I do a lot of freelance work, and I’ve finally hit the point where logging my hours on scraps of paper, or remembering to track time in a spreadsheet is just too annoying to continue. So I’ve started my own timesheet/invoicing app that you can track/fork/clone from github here. Once it’s finished of course. But during my development, I was excited to implement the new Rails 4.1 ActiveRecord enums feature. Super easy, right? Optio...
