SPLENDOR CINEMA: December 2011
http://splendorcinema.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
There was an error in this gadget. Saturday, 31 December 2011. Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012. The last year was one of huge personal and professional changes for me, and although change can be painful, it was also necessary and has set me on a new course in many ways. This blog has taken a back seat in my life, due to lack of time, and also a re-definition of what it's for. The podcast I record with Robert Beames. Is pretty active too. Have a great year! Duke of Yorks Picturehouse. Saturday, 17 December 2011.
SPLENDOR CINEMA: Vilnius - Final Post
http://splendorcinema.blogspot.com/2012/03/vilnius-final-post.html
There was an error in this gadget. Friday, 30 March 2012. Vilnius - Final Post. Yesterday was the closing ceremony of the festival. And we awarded our CICAE. Prize to BEST INTENTIONS. A Romanian feature which stood far above the rest of the competition films. It was shot in a subjective POV style (imagine Peep Show but less irritating) with quite astonishing consistency and powerful camerawork. All round top notch performances and a simple yet completely universal story. An Estonian adaptation of Dostoev...
SPLENDOR CINEMA: October 2011
http://splendorcinema.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
There was an error in this gadget. Thursday, 27 October 2011. On Tuesday The Guardian's Film. Website published a review I wrote for their Cine-Files. Blog, a weekly look at cinemas across the world. My review was for the Amsterdam cinema Kriterion. A beautiful cinema in a city filled with gorgeous cinemas. Kriterion is at the heart of the film industry in Amsterdam, and everyone I know in that city has worked there at some point or another. You can read the article here. Tuesday, 18 October 2011. This i...
SPLENDOR CINEMA: July 2011
http://splendorcinema.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
There was an error in this gadget. Saturday, 30 July 2011. Sarajevo - Final Day. Yesterday I awarded the CICAE Prize to BREATHING, an Austrian film by first time director Karl Markovics. The only other film that was considered for the prize was AMNESTY. An Albanian film which was solid throughout but let itself down with a melodramatic ending and a jarring harmonica score. Friday, 29 July 2011. Yesterday was my first day without my fellow Jury members and without any 'homework' cinema to watch, so I sche...

SPLENDOR CINEMA: February 2012
http://splendorcinema.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
There was an error in this gadget. Wednesday, 15 February 2012. Berlinale, Part 2. My second and last update for the Berlinale 2012 edition is much smaller as I've taken a much more relaxed approach to the scheduling as mentioned in my previous post. I also recorded a podcast with Rob Beames, who has seen a lot more films than me. Chris Keneally's documentary SIDE BY SIDE. Zhang Yimou's epic THE FLOWERS OF WAR. Billy Bob Thornton's first film in a decade, JAYNE MANSFIELD'S CAR. Suffers from both too long...
SPLENDOR CINEMA: September 2011
http://splendorcinema.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
There was an error in this gadget. Tuesday, 27 September 2011. Sorry for the delayed update but I hit the ground running straight after landing and haven't had a moment free since. Enough excuses. I attended this year's edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival (or Donostia Zinemaldia in Basque) for its 59th edition, as a guest of the CinemaLab programme, which seeks to create better links between European exhibitors and distributors and Latin American films. Labels: Academy Awards Nominations. The surp...
SPLENDOR CINEMA: Hiatus
http://splendorcinema.blogspot.com/2012/07/hiatus.html
There was an error in this gadget. Wednesday, 4 July 2012. This blog is going on indefinite hiatus - the workload has increased significantly and I basically just don't have the time. I can easily fit the podcasting into the work schedule but writing reviews, think pieces and in general post has become more and more difficult. So, please do continue to listen to our podcast. Which is updated almost weekly (also available on iTunes. And do read Robert Beames' blog, Beames on Film. 12 November 2012 at 17:34.
SPLENDOR CINEMA: April 2011
http://splendorcinema.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
There was an error in this gadget. Saturday, 30 April 2011. A couple of days back Rob and I sat down to record one of our now legendary Pantheon podcasts, where we look at one single director that we both love and place them in the pantheon of all time greats. That was an easy task with Terrence Malick, whom I consider one of the all-time and. Splendor Cinema Podcast 55: Terrence Malick. Sunday, 10 April 2011. The Newer, Slimmer Splendor. In fact, my whole relationship to this blog has changed recently a...
SPLENDOR CINEMA: Vilnius Day 3 & 4
http://splendorcinema.blogspot.com/2012/03/vilnius-day-3-4.html
There was an error in this gadget. Monday, 26 March 2012. Vilnius Day 3 and 4. The good weather has given way to snow and cold but the hospitality and relentless schedule of films has kept us warm. At this rate, I'll end up seeing more films than in Berlin! Three more competition films. I probably should refrain from talking to much about them as we have to judge them in a few days, but we saw: THE MAIDEN DANCED TO DEATH. Yet another Herzog film, one that previews tonight in the UK, INTO THE ABYSS. There...
