The Slow Car Club. The Party (the night before). Call me Captain Sensible, but I thought it would be a good idea to have a party the night before the Slow Car Club Races. Please Sir. Can I have some more? The younger members of the 55 family are faced with a stern looking Clive. Traditional party games include musical logs. As soon as someone goes off for another beer the log they were sitting on is thrown into the bonfire. Sadly nobody bids, and the Mary Rose is lost forever on the bonfire.

MGB Drag Racing

The Slow Car Club are proud to have The Stag at the event. Some say he doesn't ever sleep, and eats small children for breakfast. All we know is that he's called The Stag and is surely the fastest driver at the Pod. Sadly, The Stag didn't bring the fastest car. The Stag gets off to a perfect start with a reaction time of 0.01 seconds. But the Jap repmobile racing against him zooms along the track and leaves the MGB for dead. Oh dear, what's this. Austin 7 Drag Racing

Probably the coolest slow car at the event was Mark's tiny Austin 7 Ulster replica. Austin 7 technology looks great up against the tuned modern cars, but Mark couldn't hear his own engine over the racket. The modern car quickly disappears up the strip giving the Austin a little peace and quiet. The Austin continues up the strip, crossing the line at around 50mph, immediately qualifying as Slow Car Club runner up. Back to the Slow Car Club. The Slow Car Club.

Fast Cars at Santa Pod

Fast Cars at Santa Pod. A number of fast cars were kind enough to join us for the Slow Car event. A rather nice Ford Mustang (combustion forces presumably blew the bonnet off at the start line) races against a Chevrolet Camaro (combustion forces have merely created a huge dent in the bonnet). There were some real dragsters racing. This one was running normally aspirated and was putting in 8 second quarter miles. The Wild Child dragster proudly displayed the Crap Trumps sticker. Ford Escort at Santa Pod

The Crap Trumps Escort managed the most spectacular burnout of the day. Santa Pod has a dip before the start line that's filled with water. If you drop your driven wheels in there and then drop the clutch you can spin your outside wheel until the tread falls off. The Escort did this with gay abandon and earns a Slow Car Club runner up prize. With the tyres up to temperature the Escort fired off the start line leaving the wonderful Italian Fiat Bravo standing. Santa Pod September 2004. Santa Pod FIA Drag Racing Finals. These are Gary's photos from the Saturday qualifying session at Santa Pod on 11th September 2004. A drag bike sets off up the drag strip. Nearly a quarter mile left to run which should take him less than 7 seconds. A funny car (really a full sized dragster shortened and fitted with a rear hinging body). A baby supercharger sits in it's carry cot. Top fuel dragsters are amazing to watch (and very noisy). 0 to 250mph in 5.4 seconds.

Cool Cars at Santa Pod

A Honda Civic Type R with 25 inch wheel rims looked good in black with a bright yellow Crap Trumps sticker. The latest version of tuned Civic is a Type RR. The Slow Car Club would like to suggest Honda Make a Type RoRRR. The Jag was super cool and was putting in some impressive times. I didn't get the chance to look at the engine, but I did spot a tank of Nitrous in the boot. This mini had an engine at each end which seemed a good idea. A Peugeot 306 caught by high sped film. Drag Racing Transit Van

High Speed Racing Transit Van - Overall Winner. Team didn't take the event very seriously. Their mascot Transit van seemed to have a constant party going on around it. The van was filled with boxes of Crap Trumps which were distributed along with stickers to other competitors. By the end of the day just about every car on the strip had a Crap Trumps sticker. Here it is at the start line. Still at the start line, the driver's attention is caught by a Scoobedoo speeding away into the distance.
