Sodium vs. Salt. My 8- almost 9-year old son, Ben, is interested in the periodic table of elements. I mean, really, what 3rd grader isn’t? And ever since he started learning the elements, he’ll make comments about the heaviest element or see things and say, look mom, it’s gold! Followed by a chuckle. What did he see? He saw the letters AU, of course. I mean, duh, Mom…. Another of his favorite sayings is, Uh, Mom? Putting sodium chloride on my food? This is said with incredulity and disbelief. When we eat...

50 Foods to Feed Your Brain |
https://thehealthdiary.wordpress.com/2011/04/09/50-foods-to-feed-your-brain
50 Foods to Feed Your Brain. I’ve just been inspired by an elementary school friend (thanks to Facebook! To get back to writing. He’s right. I mean really? I have articles written already, they’re just not posted. And when I admit that to all of you, it, well, makes me feel bad. I mean, really, all I had to do was copy the article from Word and reformat. How hard is that? Apparently pretty damn hard because it’s been over a month since I last posted anything. But on to the post. Almond milk, unsweetened.

Influenza? Um, no thanks. |
https://thehealthdiary.wordpress.com/2011/02/28/influenza-um-no-thanks
Um, no thanks. So I was on the couch for about a week. Coughing. Sneezing. Wiping my eyes. Coughing. Blowing my nose. Nursing a fever. Coughing. I Was Miserable. I missed an entire week of work and went through about 10 boxes of Puffs with Lotion (best ever for very sore noses). But I’m back. I hope to have a ‘real’ post done soon. It might even be on the importance of getting your flu shot each year…. Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window). I’m a b...

How do your foods rank? |
https://thehealthdiary.wordpress.com/2011/02/17/how-do-your-foods-rank
How do your foods rank? I’m not suggesting that you rank your fave, must-have foods here. What I’m asking you is, where does the food you eat rank in nutrition? If you find yourself thinking, “well, my 1/2 pound Happy Burger has lettuce and tomatoes so…I’m getting some nutrients there, right? 8221; then you need to check out the Aggregated Nutrient Density Index. Then, he converted all of the above nutrient values to one common unit of measure – some are in IU (like Vitamin E) while some are in mg&...

Michael Pollan’s Food Rule #9 |
https://thehealthdiary.wordpress.com/2011/03/02/michael-pollans-food-rule-9
Michael Pollan’s Food Rule #9. Very much overdue, here’s Michael Pollan’s Food Rule #9. My favorite, favorite part of this rule is the very last line. In fact, I’m fairly certain I annoy people repeating that in conversations…. 9 Avoid food products with the wordoid “lite” or the terms “low-fat” or “nonfat” in their names. The forty-year-old campaign to create low- and nonfat versions of traditional foods has been a failure: We’ve gotten fat on low-fat products. Why? Click to print (Opens in new window).
