Womencare Counseling: March 2014
http://womencarecounseling.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Friday, March 21, 2014. World Down Syndrome Day. Today is World Down Syndrome Awareness Day- 3/21, in honor of the 3 replications of the 21st chromosome. The idea of today is to educate people about Down Syndrome. In my six and a half years of active learning about Down Syndrome and its impact on my life and others, there are a few truths I’ve come to:. We can never truly know a person’s gifts and challenges at any one point in their life. There is never just one path, or just one answer. Now imagine a m...

Womencare Counseling: Daylight Savings Time
http://womencarecounseling.blogspot.com/2014/11/daylight-savings-time.html
Thursday, November 20, 2014. I dread the “fall back” clock changes of the Daylight Savings Time cycle. The references to increasing darkness and lessening light set off ripples of loss—of what has been and will not be. Of holidays that are manically portrayed as happy, yet cause so much grief to so many. Of aging. Of dwindling resources. Of troubling politics. It is hard to hold hope in this season sometimes. It is as quiet as a grave, and as still as a waiting womb. As autumn days dim and my human spiri...

Womencare Counseling: Listening to the Untold Stories
http://womencarecounseling.blogspot.com/2015/02/listening-to-untold-stories.html
Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Listening to the Untold Stories. Traumas are often wordless. I learned that words were a gift. If you were allowed to name it, describe it, teach it, you could master it or at least tame it. When it remains wordless, the horror and shame takes over and limits people lives and potential. Laurie Kahn, MA, MFA, LCPC. Do you have an opinion on this post? Have some insights to add to this article? We would love for you to leave us a comment below! April 7, 2015 at 8:15 PM.

Womencare Counseling: February 2014
http://womencarecounseling.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 18, 2014. Tools for Moving from Surviving to Thriving. Sexual violence is an abuse of power and control. It is a violation of the body, mind and soul. It renders a person powerless. Sometimes, there is a single act of abuse, but often the horror is repeated over and over. Compounding this horror, the perpetrator is rarely the stranger lurking on the street but a person who is supposed to love us, take care of us… or just be able to respect our integrity as human beings. I believe that a...

Womencare Counseling: Breadcrumbs
http://womencarecounseling.blogspot.com/2014/09/breadcrumbs.html
Monday, September 22, 2014. I can’t say I remember much about my young childhood years. It seems like they would have been fun. My parents really wanted a second child, and my sister really wanted a younger sister, so I have heard I was well adored and spoiled with much love and affection. Yet the parts of my childhood I seem to remember more vividly are my adolescent years. My sister went off to college. My mom was diagnosed with cancer. After a long battle, she died. I was terribly disconnected. When w...

At the end of our recent Fall Institute, we offered slips of paper and asked that attendees write about a piece they would take with them. Here are just a few of the thoughts our attendess left with us, reflecting what they learned:. 8220;The importance of being self-aware and taking care of not only myself, but other caregivers, to help them cope with what is going on.”. Tuesday, November 25, 2014. Holiday Moments: from Mania to Meditation (Or, how to learn to love doing the dishes.). Wilfred Bion, a 20th century psychoanalyst, is famously quoted for suggesting starting each session "without memory or desire." His aim is to truly hear one's meaning in each new moment, and not confuse it with what you expect, hope, or hope it not, to be. What if we were to approach the holiday season the same way? Things got a little crazy over the past few months, with our move to Manhattan taking up much of the space in my head. I am alright with that. We're now settled into our new building, the picture frames are hung on the walls, and every morning, I walk through the city with a "pinch me" sensation. So, it seems quite fitting that my first recipe posted from our new apartment in Manhattan should be a twist on the drink whose name pays homage to this city. To be entirely forthright, this is not exactly.

Christmas 2014 : Part Two. As mentioned in the previous post, we left right after Christmas Eve candlelight service to head up to the camp. My youngest sister Rachel and husband Hollis had been up there for a couple days and would be celebrating Christmas morning with us. After arriving at the camp we prepared for Santa, hung stockings, dressed in Christmas jammies, said our prayers, and quickly went to bed. Christmas morning was so fun being at the camp. And then there are always the stockings. There is...

Create your life and live the dream. The Longer I Run. November 12, 2014. November 12, 2014. I listened to this song so many times on my trip across America. Now, everytime I hear it, I am taken back. Missouri: The Show-Me State. November 7, 2014. Missouri was a whirlwind experience for us as we were only there for 1 day. After spending 3 quiet, but full, days in Kentucky we began our 8-9 hour car ride to Branson, Missouri located in the south west corner of the state. I think one of my favorite parts wa...
