A New Zealand girl in Finland. June 13, 2016. June 14, 2016. I received an email from Eatos Mexican Diner recently asking us to dine as guests, which we were happy to accept. There’s always a risk with these collaborations however and I’ve either said no before or after we’ve tried something as I haven’t wanted to promote it. For our mains we ordered three dishes and a couple of sides. Miko and I shared Pescadilla – corn tortillas with cod, chipotle and coleslaw. Each layer of ingredients w...For a mainl...

A New Zealand girl in Finland. How to chill during winter. January 7, 2017. January 7, 2017. I asked Siri recently what the temperature was and got this reply:. Which made it clear to me that Siri is not Finnish because -10 / 14F and sunny is a perfect winter’s day in Helsinki. What we’ve had lately though is -21 /-5.8F with a wind chill of -28 /-18.4F, making life difficult as we still have errands to run and as we don’t have car it’s all done on foot. Back in time to Turku | Hey Helsinki
https://heyhelsinkiblog.com/2016/07/19/back-in-time-to-turku
A New Zealand girl in Finland. Back in time to Turku. July 19, 2016. Last weekend we made our first visit to Turku, Finland’s original capital and home to the Turku Castle. Overlooking the Aura River, building is believed to have begun on the site as early as 1280 AD. While the original buildings have been added to and renovated over the years, progress has been interrupted at times by fire and the effects of war. I especially loved the white walls, wide wooden floor boards and countless window nooks.

A New Zealand girl in Finland. June 26, 2014. June 26, 2014. I don’t really like art galleries. Or Christmas fruit cake. And as a woman of a certain age I feel like I should – but sometimes I stand in front of paintings wondering how long before I can move on to the gallery cafe or gift shop. A giant rose made from soft jube sweets. Slow day in the office? In there amongst all that colour. I know the door is here somewhere…. It’s a very greenhouse. Holiday scenes depicted on perspex. Is a room of just th...

Helsinki Underground | Hey Helsinki

A New Zealand girl in Finland. January 23, 2015. January 27, 2015. When I first used Helsinki’s subway system I felt like I was the only one swiping my travel card. Was everyone else riding for free? I didn’t want to be the only chump paying for rides so for a while I stopped swiping my travel card too. When in Rome and all that…. Turns out I’m not in Rome, I’m in Helsinki, in one of the least corrupt countries. Walk right in…. Which makes it easy to use and also leaves you much more time to visit the ci...

I love you – & inanimate objects | Hey Helsinki
https://heyhelsinkiblog.com/2016/07/26/i-love-you-inanimate-objects
A New Zealand girl in Finland. I love you – and inanimate objects. July 26, 2016. While Finnish people do feel emotions, they don’t tend to express them as often as we do in New Zealand or other parts of the world. Finnish Nightmares by Karoliina Korhonen. In fact, my Finnish friend told me she finds it over the top when foreigners express their love for inanimate objects like coffee, or a town they have only visited once. Finnish Nightmares by Karoliina Korhonen. To which she returned a small polite smi...
