What is Going On? An Hour To Keep →. May 30, 2014. Every spring I experiment with the contents of our flower box. Only the heartiest of plants can flourish in it. Squirrels. Shade, and on-again, off-again drought make it nearly impossible for most plants to survive through the summer. One spring we picked up some mint cuttings that kind neighbors set out in a bucket by the side of the road. My daughter thought the mint might do well in the flower box. It does. Almost. Just when I was congratulating mysel...

The Work of Darkness. What is Going On? I Can Live with This. October 8, 2013. When the x-rays taken a few weeks ago revealed that I have bone-on-bone arthritis in both hip joints I had two reactions: “Aha! 8221; and “Oh no.”. I thanked the doctor for helping me understand the source of my pain. Then I went home and wept. Visions of loss and limits overwhelmed me. I felt like I was drowning in sea of restrictions, modifications and changes beyond my control. I wallowed in self-pity for a while. But s...

I Can Live with This. Adjacent Possibilities →. What is Going On? February 13, 2014. As the wintry mix came down in Chapel Hill last night my daughter and I watched Jon Stewart interview George Clooney during one of last week’s episodes of “The Daily Show. Why all this snow? Stewart was ready with a comic answer, as always. “It’s wrath. We elected a communist, so God is punishing us.”. We laughed at this ludicrous explanation. But the question lingers. What is going on? Why all the snow? Now I don’...

Comfort in the Storm. Learning to Fly–and Fall–and Fly Again →. August 11, 2012. Immediately following a memorial service for a 41-year-old father of three this summer, a young girl I didn’t know stepped out of the receiving line and gave me a hug. Her innocent human touch was just what I needed. I thought about the power of such innocent, healthy touch throughout that weekend. And then I happened to hear this testimony by prison chaplain Chris Hoke ( No Contact. Click to email (Opens in new window).

Newer posts →. May 11, 2012. I saw a strange thing the other morning in our backyard: an opossum with multiple babies clinging to her back. I didn’t know what it was at first. An opossum with some kind of deformity? A rare animal I had never encountered? No, it was a mother opossum, carrying her many squirmy little ones as she looked for food. In so many ways all of these changes are a blessing. Who would I be without my two children? One of the most moving books I’ve read this year is called,. The disci...

Touches of Grace →. Comfort in the Storm. July 23, 2012. Lately my dog Sam steps into the bathtub during thunderstorms. Something about that space comforts him. Maybe it’s being behind a curtain that makes him feel safe. Or the association with his bimonthly baths. The memory of still water. I’ll never know, but I do know that he knows where to go when the situation outside scares him. So I re-read Wendell Berry’s “Peace of Wild Things. Click to email (Opens in new window). I Can Live with This →. The Work of Darkness. April 14, 2013. As many times as I’ve reflected on the witness of the resurrection, every Easter something new captures my imagination. 8221; To which my daughter responded, “I’m not saying it’s bad; it’s just a statement.” The kids were right: there’s nothing bad about asking questions, especially about the resurrection. This year it was the transforming power of darkness that moved me. I was struck by how much happens in the tomb after everyone goes home.
