Trying to pin nursing down on paper. Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Recently I had to manually add physician's orders to our charting system. (The pharmacy does this for us during normal business hours.) Another little milestone and another little roadblock. Doing something new - yay! Wondering how to do that - yay? It was a super great conversation with the MD that left me scratching my head wondering "How do I chart that? And "What is the pertinent information out of that 15 minute conversation to chart?

Trying to pin nursing down on paper. Friday, February 6, 2015. Needs to be Written. I leave most shifts with a picture that I can't get out of my head. Happy or sad, poignant or frustrating, it is stuck there until I do "something" with it. This being my last semester of nursing school, I decided to do something better. But I wasn't doing this type of reflection already. I dealt my stuck images in another way - sleep, food, a drink at the end of shift. And based on the amount of complaining I hea...And s...

Trying to pin nursing down on paper. Friday, October 17, 2014. How to find a friend in nursing school. The opposite of the crazy hard shell of armor you keep around yourself is the love and protection and companionship of your fellow students who need friends as much as you do. Need to make some friends in nursing school? I remember a day we were in a long line at Tim Hortons. 'Cause that never happens, right? I started talking without a filter about how I still haven't gotten around to studying for that...

Taking the NCLEX in 2015? Read this. | adrienne, RN

Trying to pin nursing down on paper. Monday, May 5, 2014. Taking the NCLEX in 2015? My two week vacation from being a nursing student is up, and I started digging into some of my study materials. Only to hit a wall. I realized that I know NOTHING about this test. Whatever amount of truth was embedded in these statements, the reality of taking the NCLEX was promising to be starkly different from my experience with the CPRNE - the test I took to become an RPN. We do this all the time. And so began a coffee...

Trying to pin nursing down on paper. Wednesday, February 19, 2014. No need for a manual. Last week there was a blog carnival with contributors submitting pieces about nurse bullying. While I do have comments on that issue, my overwhelming new experience as a new RPN - that's a Registered Practical Nurse here in Ontario - has been one of support and encouragement from my fellow nurses. I think that story is worth telling too. The truth is that I'm both. A student and a nurse. Before, during, and after eve...
