When people think of the northern lights, they usually think of the northern parts of Alaska, Canada, and Scandinavia - Juneau, Alaska usually does not come to mind. But although it's at only about 59 north latitude, the Juneau Icefield is actually nicely situated under the auroral arc. I took this month's featured photo, Storm Range Aurora. February 1, 2008. Welcome to The Crevasse Zone. Every summer since 1946, scientists and students with the Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) have lived on and studied the Juneau Icefield in southeast Alaska. One of the main projects conducted by the program is measuring and monitoring glacier velocities and surface elevation changes using high-precision GPS.
