Musicians Rebuilding Professional Networks after Katrina. There are a lot of user populations that are not going to respond to an ad on craigslist. In this project, we had to go where our target participants spent time and interview them on the spot. Recruited musicians, sound engineers, and managers from shows and music events around New Orleans. Conducted semi-structured interviews on sidewalks, in coffee shops, or anywhere we could hear well enough to have a conversation.

A Web Design Tool in the Wild. I wanted to get beyond initial impressions of a new web design tool, so I left the tool with designers to use in the context of their daily work. In a relatively short amount of time, the shine wore off, and I got the opportunity to see if the tool changed team dynamics. A single step in a complicated workflow: The web designer slices a Photoshop file into a collection of assets appropriate for display on a website.

Web Search Strategies of Crafters. Visiting participants in their homes and studios was the key to getting rich details and vivid stories about web search experiences. Recruited participants with custom postcards left at hacker/crafter spots around the Bay Area. Conducted semi-structured interviews in participants’ homes or studios, where we could easily reference both online and offline activities. And I've developed research recommendations for a wide range of technologies. I currently contribute to the design of photo-sharing services. For Adobe Systems.
