I am Jessica Terrill and I am the current Miss Historic South 2012, and former Miss MSU 2011. Through my work of fighting illiteracy in Mississippi, I became aware of an organization entitled FirstBook which addresses one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books. It is my mission to give children the opportunity to have the resources needed to further their education, and also give children the opportunity to share in the same joy I receive from reading.

I just never want to see a child not reach his or her goals because of this problem that should have never become present. Let's not only fight illiteracy.let's end it! The problem of illiteracy is generational. We are passing this problem down from one generation to the next. Schools can’t do it alone. Parental involvement is key. Lack of early testing for learning disabilities. 4) Losing faith and confidence in their future.
