Mom's Quilts
These pages are dedicated to the beautiful quilts my Mother designs, sews together and then quilts by hand. She made her first quilt in 1965 and since has made many quilts, pillows, Raggady Ann and Andys and Sock Monkeys. Mom has started selling a few of her quilts here! Here are some of the latest quilts she has completed. Here are all the new quilts added recently.
Projects in Progress
http://www.crowsnest.us/woodshop/woodworking_projects/projects_in_progress.htm
Extension Table for Grizzly Tablesaw. I made a frame of 1x2 poplar from the sawmill. I pocket screwed the boards together. I covered the frame with 5/8 plywood. On the exposed sides I banded it with some oak, and glued some Formica on top. I polyurethane all the exposed wood and used 6 brass thread inserts to attach the table to the rails. Cabinet under right wing of Grizzly Tablesaw. Here are all the pieces for the drawer sides, and then the drawers completed. The drawer fronts are complete and poly'd.
Cat D318 Power Unit
http://www.crowsnest.us/caterpillar/D318.htm
Here is our engine for the sawmill. It is a 1948 D318 Industrial rated at 78.5 Hp at 1720 RPM. Basically it is the same engine as in our Caterpillars but with two more cylinders. Here it is where we picked it up in Ohio, a 1,700 mile round trip from home. It is stuck from sitting several years so we have to pull the head and free it up. The guy we bought it from had a heavy duty forklift that he loaded it on our trailer with. The pony engine needs new rings, bearings and some valves ground.
Other Projects
http://www.crowsnest.us/other_projects.htm
This is a trailer that my brothers, my Dad and I built so I had a way of transporting big loads as I only own a car. It has a tilt bed so I can slide heavy loads onto the ground. We built everything except the fenders and springs. We even built the axle, those wheels and hubs are off a Ford Tempo. Here I have it hooked up to my car. I have a Mercury Mystique with the 2.5 Liter Duratec V-6 with a 5 speed manual transmission.
Frick Sawmill
http://www.crowsnest.us/sawmill/frick_sawmill.htm
The spring of 2008 we bought a Frick Sawmill. It is a combination of two models of Frick mills, the husk is from a 0 and the carriage is from a 00. We acquired new main beams, they are from an old bridge and stand 15 tall. The old carriage was made of wood and not in good shape, so we built a new one of steel. 3x5 1/4 wall box iron. Here is the husk. We had to modify it for the new main beams and the new bearings for the mandral that we bought from FrickCo. On the right we have the husk setting in place.
Caterpillars
http://www.crowsnest.us/caterpillar/caterpillar.htm
In Sept 2003 we purchased a 1948 Cat D318 engine (that's the size in a 1950s D6). It is stuck from sitting for several years. We have to get it running and come up with a 2.5:1 reduction and then install it on our sawmill and make more sawdust! We have completely gone through the engine prior to using it on the mill. With that done we will have a lifetime capable engine. You can see the progression of the restoration from mid November 2003 until mid April 2004 by clicking here. Here you can see the sproc...

This is a Kaleidoscope pattern quilt that mom saw on quilting show on TV and liked it so she made it. She gave it to her youngest son. All the grandkids fought over this quilt. They finally drew lots to see who would get it, and the eldest won. This quilt each star has different material for the points. This top mom bought from the Amish and then quilted it. This is an single Irish chain pattern quilt.
Appliqued
http://quilts.crowsnest.us/appliqued.htm
This took my mother as whole winter to complete. The pedals are hand appliqued on and the stems are satin stitched on. It is all hand quilted around each flower and stems and in the blank space in between the flowers. Each square in between the appliqued hearts is a quilted heart design. No two skirts are the same on this quilt. Again all the shirts and bonnets are hand appliqued with button hole stitching. Each flower along the butterfly is a different color. The butterflies are appliqued on.
