They are formed when water seeping from the rock layers above deposit tiny amounts of calcite onto the cavern's ceiling. Thin, hollow tubes called "soda straw stalactites" are young formations that will eventually fill with water and thicken. Columns develop when a stalactite and a stalagmite connect and become a solid pillar of rock. Helictites seem to defy gravity! Click Here for Hours.

After sinking a 40-foot shaft into the limestone in search of lead ore, he came upon several hundred feet of natural passage and inadvertently uncovered a massive cave system.
