The Eastside View: Hotels in Italy
http://cshere.blogspot.com/2015/06/hotels-in-italy.html
Travel, eating, reading, theater, music; occasional political remarks. Monday, June 08, 2015. Eastside Road, June 7, 2015—. I N A MONTH. 160;in Italy, May 6 through June 3, we stayed in thirteen different apartments, hotels, and. Relying on four sources for suggestions: Airbnb. Naples and vicinity: . While the buildings are a good way from the center of the old city — a half hour's leisurely walk, I'd say — one of the three Naples. Is a five-minute walk from the gate; it leads down to the Chiaia area, wi...

The Eastside View: December 2014
http://cshere.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Travel, eating, reading, theater, music; occasional political remarks. Monday, December 22, 2014. Eastside Road, December 22, 2014—. The year, as I do the week before Christmas most years, I find a forgotten poem written last month — November 11, in fact; Armistice Day. The occasion: thoughts on Carel Fabritius's painting. A favorite painting of mine. (No: I haven't read the currently popular novel of that name, and don't intend to.). To a thick block. Not read for suspected freedoms. The New Yorker,.

Travel, eating, reading, theater, music; occasional political remarks. Saturday, May 23, 2015. 8: Don’t worry. No problem. Viale di Villa Pamphili, May 21, 2015. ES, A LITTLE BIT. The very nice fellow at our apartment counseled me against that attempt. E tutto bloccato in centro città. But which office, and where would it be? I call, Italian for Anybody here? And finally a man answers, walking slowly over toward us. I explain everything to him in my very much broken Italian: the car is due at noon, a...
The Eastside View: 11: More Ruins
http://cshere.blogspot.com/2015/05/11-more-ruins.html
Travel, eating, reading, theater, music; occasional political remarks. Monday, May 25, 2015. Viale di Villa Pamphili, May 25, 2015. Day about the Roman ruins out at Ostia Antica — what must have been quite a big seaport town a couple of thousand years ago. As I noted, I have a fondness for ruins, which resonate with my innate melancholy. Nowhere in sight. We walked in some disappointment and confusion back to our car, to find another had just parked next to it. Its driver turned out to be a Germa...You c...

Grace on the Go: Book Review: The Belgium & Netherlands Coffee Guide
http://grace-on-the-go.blogspot.com/2012/10/book-review-belgium-netherlands-coffee.html
Grace on the Go. Wednesday, October 3, 2012. Book Review: The Belgium and Netherlands Coffee Guide. Weeks ago, I found out about a recent publication: The Belgium and Netherlands Coffee Guide. I spent about 30 seconds trying to decide whether it was worth the investment, than threw the decision-making out the window, went with my gut, and ordered it. I am not going to get any work done today! And ripped the paper away with more excitement than most kids with their birthday presents. When I ordered this b...
Grace on the Go: Snowflakes
http://grace-on-the-go.blogspot.com/2009/12/this-morning-i-went-with-roman-to-take.html
Grace on the Go. Saturday, December 19, 2009. This morning, I went with Roman to take Ema sledding. (No, the picture I've posted has nothing to do with the entry, but it's Prague looking pretty at Christmastime. What more could you ask for? We got all bundled up because it's -7 (that's 19 degrees Fahrenheit) or something out there (it was -10 earlier but we waited and it got a teeny bit warmer). We trudged out - don't you love that crunching sound of snow beneath your feet? Praha draped in snow for Chris...
Grace on the Go: March 2010
http://grace-on-the-go.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Grace on the Go. Wednesday, March 10, 2010. Apologies to my thousands (not) of faithful (heh heh) readers for allowing this blog to be so dead lately. I've had lots of good post ideas floating around in my head the past two months, but I always get them when I'm out walking or doing something, and then never get around to sitting down and typing it out and actually posting it. They usually get eliminated before anyone can start rooting for them in the first place. On the other hand, why would we root...
Grace on the Go: Binge Baking
http://grace-on-the-go.blogspot.com/2013/01/binge-baking.html
Grace on the Go. Sunday, January 6, 2013. I love to bake. I do bake a lot, however, when I get to housesit for my parents. My parents went on a short trip a couple of months ago; I spent the week baking. I started by mentioning to my mother, before she left, that I wanted to try to make biscotti. Oh, good idea! She said. "Are you going to make Aunt Victoria's biscotti? Maybe," I shrugged. "What book is that in? Oh" I said. Then, "OOOooohhhhh, that. Which has become a fast favorite in my family for the se...
Grace on the Go: June 2012
http://grace-on-the-go.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Grace on the Go. Tuesday, June 12, 2012. It's been about a year and a half since I last posted something on this blog. I've thought about reviving it, many times, but then I never know where to start. An idea comes to me when I'm out and about, but then it seems awkward to sit down, write something, and publish it after such a gap. But then, breaks are natural occurrences, and really, who cares. The hell with it, as my grandfather. Likes to remind me. And, oh yeah,. But working in this cafe has given me ...
Grace on the Go: Coffee Culture Comparison
http://grace-on-the-go.blogspot.com/2008/07/coffee-culture-comparison.html
Grace on the Go. Saturday, July 26, 2008. Working in a cafe in the Netherlands has led me to several observations about the differences between cafes and coffee culture in Europe and the U.S. - specifically differences between the Pacific Northwest's dedicated coffee diehards. And the Netherlands more simple (it seems) maintenance of tradition. One of the most notable differences between coffee consumption in the Netherlands and Stumptown. Is the way it's taken. Coffee is traditionally a social activity&...

The Eastside View
Travel, eating, reading, theater, music; occasional political remarks. Thursday, February 15, 2018. Has come and gone, bringing Ash Wednesday with him — a curious and perhaps ominous conjunction that I don't recall ever experiencing before. But perhaps it means nothing. Dinner last night was superb: Cook found a fine thick rib-eye at the local meat counter, and prepared it inspired by a recent NY Time recipe. Potatoes as she often cooks them, in butter, with salt, pepper, garlic, and chopped parsley.

Happy Buddha | Vietnam Study Tours
Food – Vietnam. You know the food of Vietnam is interesting when you start having teams of film crews touring the country. Here is one of the latest, Master chef host Gary Mehigan – Vietnam. Has a new series on Chanel Ten. and Tim – have a close look at the pho shop in Hanoi 😉. Should be an amazing view. In a go ahead country like Vietnam architecture is making powerful statements about their envisioned future. One of the great joys of my first visit to Vietnam was the surprise that the country was not ...
