To legally operate an amateur radio station and acquire an internationally unique call sign, you are required to pass an examination and be registered and licenced with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA). A licence can be obtained only after you pass the Radio Amateur Examination - or RAE. This is conducted twice a year in South Africa usually in April/May and October/November.

He died in a microlight aircraft accident near Melkbosstrand, on Saturday 8 August 2015. Mike was 67 years old. A report on this (in Afrikaans) may be found via this link [ here. Monday, 29 June 2015. CTARC Heard Island DXpedition - Mar '16. Some very exciting news is that a world-class DXpedition is planned to embark from Cape Town in 2016. The DXpedition is a major scientific / communications expedition to Heard Island. An Australian sub-Antarctic island lying at 53°S 73°E. ZS1AU Paul and Dennis join Pierre / ZS1HF (ex ZS8M) and Mal / ZS6MAL on this key critical support team. With the amateur radio operation taking place on about March 16 – April 8.
